NBA Finals 2023: Game 5 - Four Players' Props That Could Make the Difference

NBA Finals 2023: Game 5 - Four Players' Props That Could Make the Difference

In Game 5 of the NBA Finals, we see the Denver Nuggets and the Miami Heat clash once again, with individual performances playing a crucial role in determining the outcome. As we delve into the game's dynamics, we highlight four key player prop bets: Nikola Jokic, Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Michael Porter Jr., who may dictate the rhythm and result of this crucial game.

Nikola Jokic - Denver Nuggets

Prop: Over/Under 52.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists

With the O/U for Nikola Jokic marginally dipping from the 53.5 set in Game 4 to 52.5 for Game 5, the betting market still signals immense confidence in the Serbian center. This confidence comes despite an unexpected development in Game 4 when Jokic, the fulcrum of Denver's potent offense, found himself sidelined during a pivotal period in the fourth quarter due to a fifth personal foul. Nonetheless, his consistent output throughout the series, combined with his resilient playing style, indicates that he is primed for another influential performance in Game 5.

As we've highlighted earlier in this series, the Denver Nugget's star displays a notable disparity in scoring depending on the outcome of the game. In the Nuggets' postseason victories - 15 so far - Jokic has averaged a respectable 27.0 points per game. Contrastingly, in the four games they lost, his points per game shoots up to a whopping 41.8.

This drastic increase underscores his ability to adapt to the needs of the team, willingly shouldering the scoring responsibility in more challenging circumstances. An apt example of this was seen in Game 4, where Bruce Brown, an unexpected savior for Denver, emerged as the hero in the final quarter. Despite not being the highest scorer, Jokic's unwavering commitment to team success over personal glory was evident. He relished in his teammate's success, embodying the true spirit of a team player.

Prop: Jokic to record a Triple Double +105

Over the course of these playoffs, Jokic's propensity to record a triple-double has led to a fascinating ebb and flow within the betting markets. After recording a phenomenal 6 triple-doubles in seven games, Jokic's prop reached a high of -145 for him to record a triple-double entering Game 2.

However, this favorable trend took a hit in Game 2, when Jokic could only muster 4 assists, leading to discussions around a 'make-Jokic-into-a-scorer narrative' within the media. While Heat's coach Erik Spoelstra waved off this narrative as an oversimplification, luminaries like Steve Kerr gave credence to the concept, adding that this had been exactly the Warriors' strategy against Jokic in last year's playoffs.

Jokic, however, proved his doubters wrong with a stellar performance in Game 3. Not only did he achieve a triple-double, but he also made history with the Finals' first 30-point, 20-rebound triple-double. This shifted the betting market once again, positioning him at -115 to achieve a triple-double in Game 4. As we look forward to Game 5, the market seems to have found a balance, somewhere between the peak and the trough of the previous games in this series.

Jimmy Butler - Miami Heat

Prop: Over/Under 27.5 Points

As we turn our attention to the Miami Heat's leading man, Jimmy Butler, we find that the Over/Under prop for his point total in the looming Game 5 stands at 27.5 points. This represents a slight increase from Game 4, reflecting market expectations that the Heat will not place any minute restrictions on their star players in this critical game. Despite having a commendable 25-point performance in Game 4, there were concerns about his diminishing productivity in the second half of the game. This raised questions about Butler's ability to maintain a high-scoring momentum throughout the entirety of the game, something that could prove pivotal in the upcoming Game 5. In order to give the Heat a strong chance of securing a victory, Butler needs to step up and maintain his scoring prowess for the full duration of the game.

Digging into the specifics of his performance in Game 4, Butler had a roaring start with 14 points in the first half. However, as the game progressed into the second half, his scoring prowess waned, culminating in only 11 points despite being on the court for the entire 24 minutes post half-time. This drop in productivity came as he grappled to generate significant offense against the steely defense of the Nuggets, which raises concerns going into the crucial Game 5.

Moreover, tracing back to Butler's injury in Game 1 against the Knicks, where he twisted his ankle, his performance has not been quite up to his usual standards. He has managed to go Over his points prop only 4 times in the subsequent 15 games. Over this stretch, Butler's performance shows him averaging 23.9 PPG, a figure that is no doubt all-star worthy but pales in comparison to his initial form in this post-season run. Furthermore, his field goal percentage also displays a similar drop with him shooting at 42.6% from the field.

Before his injury, Butler was in phenomenal form, averaging 33.1 PPG and shooting at an impressive rate of over 50% from the field in the first 8 games of this post-season run. As we stand on the brink of Game 5, the Heat will be hoping for a rekindling of this early post-season form from Butler, a form that had them as one of the hot favorites at the beginning of the series.

Michael Porter Jr. - Denver Nuggets

Prop: Over/Under 10.5 Points

Despite struggling throughout the series with cold-shooting nights, Porter Jr. managed to exceed his points prop for the first time this series with 11 points in Game 4. Not unlike NBA stars Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Jayson Tatum, who all shot under 37% from the field in their NBA Finals debut, Porter Jr.'s low-scoring performance could be chalked up to first-time jitters. Nevertheless, his potential scoring prowess could prove a game-changer for the Nuggets if he manages to shake off these early struggles and find his shooting rhythm in Game 5.

Bam Adebayo - Miami Heat

Prop: Over/Under 19.5 Points

Bam Adebayo's prop for Game 5 stands at Over/Under 19.5 points. After going Over his points prop in each of the first three games of this series, Adebayo had a subpar shooting performance in Games 3 and 4, prompting a revision in market expectations. Given his crucial role as Miami's second-highest projected scorer, Adebayo's bounce-back performance in Game 5 could significantly influence the outcome.

As we anticipate the unfolding of Game 5, these four players could play pivotal roles in defining the outcome. For more in-depth analysis and predictions, stay tuned to Pregame.com and make the most of your bets.
