Still, Romney has doubled-down on his remarks, insisting that millions of Americans don't deserve any help from the government.
The remarks revealed in the video that was secretly taped at a Boca Raton fundraiser in May of this year, revealed a very different Mitt Romney than the one who has appeared on the campaign trail.
Many have suggested that the Romney in the secret video is the real Mitt Romney. If that is the case, then Romney really doesn't think Americans should get "health care…food…housing" or any other "entitlement."
Entitlements include Medicare and Social Security. And although Romney did not name those entitlements specifically in the video, he has come out in support of the Ryan budget plan, which cuts all entitlements and turns Medicare into a voucher program.
This is the essence of the ultra-conservative platform. People should be left on their own to either fail or succeed. The concept changes everything America has stood for when it comes to a sense of unity and support.
The secret Romney video followed a disappointing convention, and a string of gaffes and remarks that have been viewed by many as inappropriate, or just plain foolish.
But alienating nearly half of the population by saying that it is "not my job to worry about those people," has led to questions about whether Mitt Romney is even qualified to be president.
Conservative pundit Peggy Noonan said in the WSJ, "It’s time to admit the Romney campaign is an incompetent one. It’s not big, it’s not brave, it’s not thoughtfully tackling great issues. It’s always been too small for the moment. All the activists, party supporters and big donors should be pushing for change."
Not so long ago, Americans had a more Christian-like attitude than they do today. People believed that the government can and should play a roll in helping people succeed. For one, student loans and grants have proven to be essential to giving the poor and hand up. President Obama was among those whose life was changed by such education opportunities. And there are millions more in America who have used government programs to better themselves. However, Romney is against this.
Romney is a stranger to economic struggle, so it is not surprising that he has no compassion or care for those born into low-income families.
Entitlements also help children, the elderly, and the disabled. But Romney has failed to mention people who can't work, because it invalidates the essence of his campaign, which places blame for most of America's problems on a lack of employment opportunities.
If Romney does have a plan to raise the standard of living for all Americans, he hasn't shared the details yet.
Without an education, people can't get the skills they needs for good paying jobs. Without government loans or grants, many Americans can't get a good education.
Rather than use the government as a tool to promote success for all Americans, Romney wants to cut those people off. As he stated on the campaign trail, people who need money for college should "go ask their parents for money."
What the secret Romney video reveals is arrogance. It also demonstrates a real leadership problem. Anyone who writes-off 146 million Americans as not worth caring about, will never be worthy of the job of president of the United States.
