Forgot the year, I was living in Vegas. Golden St. with Rick Barry was playing The Washington Bullets, with Hayes, Unseld et al. Golden St, with Rick Barry, was in that NBA World Championship, and were I think double digit dogs in Games 1 and 2 and won those two games straight up. In game 3, they went to Washington and were even bigger dogs. They won straight up! Now the Warriors led by Rick Barry, were going into Game 4, with a 3-0 lead. They were playing Game 4 in Washington I'm sure, and again were dogs, but this time, were only 8 or 9 point dogs.
I had not made a wager on any of te games but I said t myself, there is no way Golden St. will sweep! Some being a smart ass punk with lots of cash, walked up tothe window at the old Churchill Downs Race and Sports Book. I asked the sports book manager, "whats the matter you afraid to make The Bullets a double digit favorite? He laughed. I said, what kind of odds do I have to lay if I take The Bullets at PK, and lay no points? He warned me, don't ever think Golden St. can't sweep tis series. I said, can a man get a price on taking Washington at PK instead of laying the 8 points? He said we are not putting that kind of price up. I said , "no because you know The Bullets won't lose 4 in a row." Now he was pissed and told me to wait a minute. He came back and asked me how much would I lay to win a dime? I said, I wanted to win 5 Dimes. He laughed and said would you lay 10 -1? I told him that was the wrong lne but thank you anyway. He said all you guys from New Orleans are alike....always trying to get the best of someone. I asked him if I could lay 6-1 to win 5 Dimes. He laughed and said "you don't wanna gamble, you wanna steal!" Put the 30 dimes on the counter and you got a bet. I thought I was stealing 5 thousand, taking Washington at home over Golden St. at PK and the line closed at 9!
P.S. I stll think I got the best price, and while its really not a "bad beat" story, its one of those "dumbest tnings I ever did in my life story." Hope you don't mind me sharing it with you.
Well, you know what happened, Rick Barry had another "game of his life" and the Warriors became World Champions. I went back to my hotel and watched the 3 Stooges! Unti tis day, I wonder if those four games in which the Warriors were underdogs was not fixed! lol
