MLB Free Picks Miami Marlins vs Chicago Cubs

Friday baseball and we will see the Miami Marlins take on the Chicago Cubs in game 1 of their 3 game series from Wrigley Field in Chicago. First pitch is scheduled for a 4:05 PM (Eastern) start time and the game will be televised locally.

Current Odds

Miami        +107
Chicago     -117

Over/ Under: 7 Even

Analysis:  The Miami Marlins have surprised many this year and they come in having just swept 4 games from the Tampa Bay Rays. The Marlins are now 32-28 on the year and are currently tied with the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East. Miami has been a very good offensive team this year, ranking 5th in the league in scoring (4.58 rpg), 6th in hitting (.263) and 10th in homers (60). The pitching has been average this year, as they rank 13th in the league in ERA (3.74) and 20th in WHIP (1.34). Getting the ball for the Marlins today will be Nathan Eovaldi, who is 4-2 with a 3.24 ERA on the year overall, including 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 5 road starts. He has never faced the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs come in at 23-34 on the year and are currently in last place in the NL Central, 11 games behind division leading Milwaukee. The Cubs are 13-13 at home this year and have won 4 of their last 5 games overall. Offensively this is a challenged team, as they come in ranked 25th in scoring (3.82 rpg), 29th in hitting (.231) and 21st in homers (47). The pitching has been average for this team, as they come in ranked 12th in ERA (3.66) and 11th in WHIP (1.26). Jason Hammel will toe the rubber for the Cubs today and he comes in with a 6-3 mark and a 2.78 ERA on the year overall, including a 3-0 mark and a 2.81 ERA at home. Jason is 1-3 with 6.14 ERA in 4 career starts vs Miami.

Pick:  I like the Cubs in this game. The Miami Marlins just came off a 4 games sweep of In-state rival Tampa Bay and there has to be a natural letdown form that. They have won 4 in a row on the road, but still are 10-17 away from home and the Cubs have been playing much better of late, have just swept the Mets in a 3 games series here and and that now means that they have won 6 of their last 7 games at Wriggley Field. Nathan Eovald is solid, but the Marlins are just 1-4 in his road starts this year and he does have a 4.50 ERA on the road. Jason Hammel is just 1-6 with a 6.14 ERA vs the Marlins in his career, but he hasn't faced them since 2011 and he is coming in pitching very well this year, going 3-0 with a 2.81 ERA at home, and 2-1 with a 1.96 ERA in his last 3 starts overall. God situational spot for the Cubs here as they take game 1 of this series.
