MLB On ESPN New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox Free Pick

Wednesday night baseball and we will see the New York Yankees take on the Boston Red Sox in game 2 of their 3 game series from Fenway Park in Boston. First pitch is scheduled for a 7:10 PM (Eastern) start time and the game will be televised on ESPN.

Current Odds

NY Yankees      +110
Boston               -119

Over/ Under: 9 U -120

Analysis: The New York Yankees are off to a solid 12-8 start to the year and they have won 7 of their last 9 games. Last night they took game 1 of this series by a 9-3 count and have now won 4 of the 5 meetings with the Sox this year so far. The Yanks have now scored 30 runs in the first 5 games of this trip so far after scoring just 8 total runs in their 3 games prior to this trip. Overall the Yanks are 12th in scoring (4.20 rpg), 3rd in hitting (.271) and 4th in OPS (.749). Pitching for the team has not been so special as they come in ranked 23rd in ERA (4.15) and 13th in WHIP (1.25). Taking the hill for the Yanks will be Michael Pineda, who is 2-1 with a 1.00 ERA and an 0.89 Whip in 3 starts this year. He has faced the Sox once this year and allowed 1 ER in 6 innings of that game, but that was at home and in his lone start in this park in his career (2011) he allowed 7 ERs in just 4.1 innings of work.

For the Sox, they are the defending World Series champs, but they are not off to a good start as they come in at 9-12 overall and just 4-7 at home for the year. Boston has won just 4 of their last 10 overall and have gone 2-3 on their current home stand so far. The biggest culprit for the Sox has been an anemic offense that ranks 24th in the league in scoring (3.76 rpg) and 22nd in hitting (.239). Dustin Pedroia leads the team in hist (23), but Napoli has been the star of this bad offense, leading them in HRs (5), RBIs (13) and batting average (.286). The Pitching has been mediocre as they rank 14th in ERA (3.71) and 21st in WHIP (1.36). They are, however, 7th in K's (178) and 4th in quality starts (13). John Lackey gets the ball for them tonight and is off a couple of rough outings in which he allowed 6 ERs to each the Orioles and these Yanks. Lackey is now 2-2 with a 6.46 ERA in his last 5 starts vs New York.

Pick: I will be going with the Under in this one. Lackey has struggled of late and vs the Yanks, but after allowing 6 ERs to the Yanks in his last outing vs them I look for him to bounce back with a solid effort tonight. For Pineda, he has been awesome in the early going and will be taking on a Boston offense that has hit just .215 in their last 10 games. An ESPN game from these teams usually means low scoring. Look for no more than 6 or 7 in this one.
