This match here between Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray is going to be the better of the two men's semfinals, at least on paper. Novak Djokovic and Ernests Gulbis will face off in the other semifinal matchup, with the winners taking on each other in the finals on Sunday morning.
Nadal is the obvious No. 1 seed here at Roland Garros. He's the clay court king, winning the last four French Open crowns and holding the record of eight championships from Roland Garros. He won four straight from 2005-08 as well. The hardest thing in professional tennis might be beating Nadal on the red clay. Nadal has a career record of 64-1 at Roland Garros.
Andy Murray finally got off the zero spot with Grand Slam titles when he picked up a 2012 US Open title over Djokovic. He backed that championship up in his home country in 2013 when he won the Championships at Wimbledon, navigating the field before eventually beating Djokovic again in the finals. Murray also claimed a gold medal in the 2012 Olympic Games.
Yet, it's worth noting that Nadal has dominated this series, sporting a head-to-head record of 14-5 over Murray. He's won six of their eight matchups in Grand Slam events and has dominated Murray on the red clay, winning all five matches. At Roland Garros this year Nadal has only dropped one set to this point, to feisty David Ferrer. Nadal would clamp down and dominate the rest of that match, picking up 18 of the final 23 games over Ferrer.
Murray has complained about some nagging injuries so far in this tournament and he's played some very physically demanding matches. He literally could be running out of gas heading into this matchup, having taken five sets to beat Phillip Kohlschreiber, a lengthy three-set match over Fernando Verdasco and a five-set marathon against Gael Monfils the last round. If Murray can find a way to physically stay in this matchup, he could potentially make it a fun match to watch.
We like Nadal to win this matchup, but expect the bulldog Murray to battle in this matchup. Everyone has reminded him about his career beatdowns to Nadal and nobody is giving him a chance here.
