2010 Heisman Preview

08/27/2010 2:34 PM ·

I've always loved the Heisman, as in spite of all its warts and blemishes, it remains the most recognized and arguably the most-cherished individual award in any sport. I began doing a weekly Heisman top-10 on my nationally-syndicated radio show ("Bally's Sports Central") in the early to mid-90s and have continued it on the internet since (my weekly Heisman update was available online every Monday during the CFB season... It’s seems like just yesterday that South Carolina beat North Carolina St 7-3 and Boise St beat Oregon 19-8. In fact, the date was September 3, 2009 and those two games were the marquee contests of CFB 2009's opening day (night) of action. September 5 marked the first Saturday of the season and shockwaves resonated across the nation when 2008 Heisman winner Sam Bradford of Oklahoma was injured the the first half of the... Read more

The current bowl season really 'heated up' this past weekend with five games apiece on Thursday (Dec 31), Friday (Jan 1) and Saturday (Jan 2), before yielding to the NFL's final Sunday of the regular season. The 2009-10 bowl season concludes with a battle of unbeatens in the Fiesta Bowl (13-0 Boise St vs 12-0 TCU) on Monday, Iowa vs Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl, Troy vs Central Michigan in the highly-anticipated GMAC... Monday's Independence Bowl featured Georgia playing Texas A&M. The game was scoreless until the late second quarter when the Aggies took a 7-0 lead. However, Brandon Boykin returned the ensuing KO 81 yards for a TD, setting a school record with three KO return TDs this year, while tying the SEC single season record. Less than a minute later, Georgia blocked a punt (Bulldogs had two in the game) which set another TD, giving... Read more

The season's first five bowl games all went over the point total with individual games averaging 66.8 PPG and surpassing the total on average by 12.6 points per contest. The Hawaii Bowl was the first game to stay under, as SMU's 45-10 win over Nevada stayed just more than two TDs under the closing total of about 70. Underdogs were 5-1 SU and ATS in the six pre-Christmas bowl games. The bowl season resumed after a Christmas... Read more

They are called minor bowls for a reason. The bowl schedule now features 34 games which means 64 schools are participating. With that many bowl openings, there almost has to be, by very definition, room for some schools which would qualify for the "cash for clunkers" program. Wyoming was surely one of those schools but the 6-6 Cowboys, who had four wins by three points or fewer and hadn't stayed within single digits... Read more

It seems like everyone loves to blame the BCS for all of college football's woes. It's the fault of the BCS that this year's regular season ended with five unbeaten teams? In my recent article Alabama-Texas a 1964 Redux, I explained how that bowl season unfolded. What I failed to mention was that there was no public outcry. However, as recently as 2004, when USC, Oklahoma and Auburn all made it through their respective... Read more

As I said in my last Heisman article of the season (Final Heisman 2009 Ballot), "I have a feeling Ingram is going to win this thing but he didn't have a more impressive season than Gerhart." In the closest Heisman vote ever, Ingram edged Gerhart by 28 points, getting 227 first-place votes to Gerhart's 222. The previous closest vote occurred in 1985, when Bo Jackson (Auburn) edged Iowa's Chuck Long by 45 points. The final... Read more

Final Heisman Update

12/11/2009 1:05 PM ·

I featured my Heisman preview back in late August and pointed out the obvious. The 2008 Heisman was won by Oklahoma's Sam Bradford with Colt McCoy of Texas finishing second and Florida's Tim Tebow (the 2007 winner) finishing third, despite garnering more first-place votes than either Bradford or McCoy. With all three players back for the 2009 season, it would be a year like no other in Heisman history. Tebow became the... Read more

The final BCS standings came out on Sunday and few were surprised that Alabama and Texas will meet in Pasadena, California on January 7 for the BCS championship. Alabama was a shoo-in for one slot in this year's BCS title game when the Tide ended Florida's 22-game winning streak with a dominating 32-13 win in the SEC championship game. Conventional wisdom said all the Longhorns needed to join Alabama in the Rose Bowl... Read more
