Bowl Preview Part II

12/09/2011 8:09 AM ·

Seventy teams played in last year’s 35 bowls with only 8-4 Temple and 6-6 Western Michigan getting left out among bowl-eligible schools. This year’s bowl season again features 35 games and again, just two schools were left out of the mix among bowl-eligible teams. Miami-Florida was 6-6 but had a self-imposed bowl ban, leaving 6-6 Ball State and 7-4 Western Kentucky as the only two schools not going ‘bowling’ among teams... Read more

Boise State coach Chris Petersen unleashed his frustration with the BCS on Monday. His 11-1 Broncos finished No. 7 in the final BCS standings but were left out of all five of the BCS Bowls (national championship game plus the Fiesta, Orange, Rose and Sugar Bowls). "Everybody is just very tired of the BCS," Petersen said. "I think that's the bottom line. Everybody is frustrated. Everybody doesn't really know what to do... Read more

Bowl Journal (Part 1)

12/21/2010 7:08 AM ·

More than three weeks before Auburn and Oregon will play in Glendale, Arizona in the BCS national championship game on January 10, 2011, the 2010-11 bowl season kicked off this past Saturday. I'll have much more on the Auburn/Oregon matchup in future Bowl Journals but let me point out that Oregon has never won a national championship and Auburn owns just one. The Tigers began the 1957 season on probation and were bowl... Read more

The final regular season game of the 2010 college football season is set for 2:30 ET from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. It's the 111th meeting between Army and Navy, a series which began in 1890 (wasn't there for that one). Army has lost eight straight contests to Navy, getting outscored 291-74 (36.4-to-9.3 PPG). However, the 2010 season has been a unique one for the service academies. The Black Knights... Read more

Raise your hand if anyone even remotely understands the current ruling handed down by the NCAA regarding Cam Newton’s eligibility. Here’s how the story unfolded this week. Auburn declared Newton ineligible on Monday (who heard about it?) but also immediately applied to the NCAA to have him reinstated. Being the benevolent institution that it is, the NCAA ruled that while Newton’s father violated NCAA rules, there was... Read more

The nation's top-4 schools in the BCS standings were the lone remaining unbeaten teams in CFB 2010. No. 4 Boise State was the first to play on Friday night and the Broncos won handily, 52-14. Saturday's results saw No. 1 Oregon get a real scare at Cal (won 15-13), No. 2 Auburn shake off an early 21-7 deficit to win 49-28 vs Georgia and No. 3 TCU play the strangest game of all. The Horned Frogs quickly fell behind 14-0... Read more

Nine of last week's BCS top-25 teams went down to defeat this past weekend, although the top-four won 53-16 (Oregon), 62-24 (Auburn), 47-7 (TCU) and 42-7 (Boise St). Oregon remained No. 1 for the second straight week in the BCS standings and Auburn No. 2 but both schools control their own destiny. If Oregon and Auburn both "win out," the two schools will meet in the national championship game. If so, the game would also... Read more

CFB Notes (Week 10)

11/05/2010 9:47 AM ·

Each CFB 'weekend' in November will open on Tuesday, although we rarely get a significant contest until Thursday. That's the case this weekend as the lone pre-Saturday game of any consequence will be No. 20 Va Tech (22nd in the BCS) hosting Ga Tech on Thursday night. The Hokies have made a remarkable resurgence, after losing their showdown game with Boise State way back on Labor Day night and following that heartbreaking... Read more

Alabama entered the 2010 season as the defending national champs and the consensus No. 1 team in the country. The Tide extended its winning streak to 19 games but lost at South Carolina 35-21 back on October 9. Ohio State, winners of 12 in a row, took over the No. 1 spot when the new polls came out the following day, earning the AP's top spot for the first time since the final regular season poll of the 2007 season. That... Read more

The nation's top-ranked team lost for the second straight Saturday (Alabama on Oct 10 and Ohio State on Oct 17), sending more than few 'shockwaves' through the polls. The 2010 Heisman 'race' has felt a few 'rattles' as well and my latest Heisman report follows. 1) KELLEN MOORE (Boise State) Last Week: 2. Boise State scored TDs on its first three drives Saturday night at San Jose State. It was 41-0 at the half, as Kellen... Read more
