CFB Notes (The BCS Cometh)

10/14/2010 11:01 AM ·

Alabama received a season-high 58 first-place votes (of 60) in the October 3 AP poll but those same pollsters showed the Tide very little 'love' after their 35-21 loss on Saturday at South Carolina. It was the first time a No. 1 team had lost a non-championship (SEC or BCS) game since Texas' dramatic defeat at Texas Tech on Nov. 1, 2008 (remember Crabtree's tight-rope down the sideline, right after the Texas DB dropped... Alabama received a season-high 58 first-place votes (of 60) in the October 3 AP poll but those same pollsters showed the Tide very little 'love' after their 35-21 loss on Saturday at South Carolina. The defending national champs faced a brutal three-game stretch which saw them win 24-20 at then-No. 10 Arkansas and crush then-No. 7 Florida 31-6 in Tuscaloosa before losing to the Gamecocks. Alabama dropped all the way to... Read more

We saw five games involving top-25 opponents this past Saturday, with the higher ranked team winning four (exception was Wisconsin losing at Michigan State). No. 1 Alabama crushed Florida but defending Heisman winner Mark Ingram had a 'quiet' game. No. 2 Ohio State struggled at Illinois (won 24-13) and QB Mark Pryor left for awhile with a minor injury. Boise State's Kellen Moore played just one series in the second half... Read more

CFB Notes (Week 5)

The first month of the 2010 CFB season closes with Thursday night's Big 12 showdown between Texas A&M and Oklahoma State. Both schools enter undefeated, two of 25 such schools. The AP's preseason top-three remain the same in the most recent poll (9/26). Alabama is a solid No. 1, followed by Ohio State and Boise State. Each of these three schools are led by legitimate Heisman contenders, Alabama RB Mark Ingram (last year... Read more

The first month of the season closed with the AP's preseason top-three in the rankings unchanged. Alabama remains No. 1, followed by Ohio State and Boise State. Those three schools are all led by legitimate Heisman contenders, Alabama RB Mark Ingram (last year's winner), Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor (my preseason favorite) and Boise State QB Kellen Moore (a modest 29-1 as a starting QB along with a 46-4 TD-to-INT ratio... 1) TERRELLE PRYOR (Ohio State) Last Week: 1. Terrelle Pryor completed 16 straight passes this past Saturday, setting a new school record (previous record was 12, most recently by Craig Krenzel 2002) in a 43-7 rout of Ohio U. It's the second-longest in Big Ten history as well, behind Iowa's Chuck Long, who completed 22 in a row back in 1984. I guess Ohio State remembered that two years ago the Bobcats led the Buckeyes... If one had to vote on the Heisman today, clearly Michigan QB Denard Robinson would be the easy winner. However, were are not voting today and much like with the AP and Coaches' polls, players (like schools in the polls), don't get to jump to the "head of the class" after two weeks. The two biggest developments over the weekend regarding the Heisman came in Alabama's dominating 24-3 win over Penn State and in James Madison... Read more

The 2010 college football season is only one week old but we already have major developments in the season's Heisman race. Alabama won its 15th straight game with ease (48-3 over San Jose St) but the Tide did it without last year's Heisman winner, Mark Ingram. Alabama outgained the Spartans 591-to-175 in yards, including 247 rushing yards on 41 carries (6.3 YPC). Ingram had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee after... Read more

The 2010 college football season got underway Thursday night with four ranked teams taking the field. No. 2 Ohio State had little trouble with Marshall, beating them 45-7 in Columbus. Terrelle Pryor opened his Heisman 'campaign' by completing 17 of 25 passes for 247 yards and three TDs (one of 65 yards) and adding 17 yards rushing. No. 13 Miami-Florida crushed Florida A&M 45-0, as QB Harris threw for three TDs and the... Read more

Nick Saban's Alabama team of 2008 entered its SEC championship game showdown with Florida ranked No. 1 in the nation sporting a 12-0 record but as 10-point underdogs to then-No. 2 Florida. The oddsmakers, not the polls, had it right as the Gators won 31-20. Florida would advance from there to beat Oklahoma 24-14 in the BCS title game and claim the school's second national championship in three years. As for the Tide,... Read more
