Great action today:
- Manchester City went to the top of Group D with an emphatic win at Sevilla. Murmurs were starting to creep up on the Citizens after an extremely lackluster performance against Manchester United two weeks ago, and then again the following week against relegation-challenged Norwich City. Man City's intentions in this contest were laid out from the beginning of the contest as they repeatedly threatened the Sevilla defense. City fired 16 shots in the first half, nine of which were on target. Big win for Manuel Pelligrini.
- The other Manchester club went to the top of their group with a late goal from Captain Wayne Rooney. The pressure has been mounting on Rooney, about whether he should be in the lineup and whether his best position is at striker or midfielder. He found himself on the end of a solid cross and headed home the winner in front of the home fans.
- Real Madrid held strong at home, holding the French champions scoreless over two legs. But PSG weren't without chances in this game. Edinson Cavani missed some GOLDEN opportunities and it just raises further questions about his ability to finish on the big stage. Angel di Maria was a constant terror on the flanks, even hitting the crossbar very late in the game on a free kick. The win clinched Los Blancos passage into the knockout stages, but questions will be asked about their offense. Their lone goal came on shot (?) from substitute Nacho Fernandez that really looked like a mis-hit cross from the left wing.
Matches continue tomorrow, with the highlight without a doubt being Bayern Munich playing host to Arsenal. Arsene Wenger opted to play a counter-attacking approach in the first leg, which really surprised the Germans, as they were unable to solve the riddle of their normally possessive English opponents sitting back so deep. This second leg should be marvelous.
