The Mysterious Dave Malinsky joins the show to talk more about Super Bowl 49.
Dave starts off by stating that Pete Caroll's decision to throw at the end of the game was marginally right. He does know his team better than anyone else and he does know that Marshawn was not great in his career from the 1 yard line and from the time management aspect of the game he made the right call. One point that he hasn't heard talked about was the fact that if they ran the ball and then had at some point scramble to the line that if they committed an offensive penalty that the game would be over thanks to the runoff of time.
Dave fully agrees with Steve Fezzik in the last segment that Bill Belichick did mismanage his Timeouts late in the game. the timeout they called right before the two minute warning could have been critical. Tom watched the play call run game and he feels it was a botch.
RJ learned that Ernie Adams, who has been a great friend of Belichick, said that he made the right call by not calling a timeout in that spot. RJ Fells that by running the clock down it really does create an air of uncertainty for the Seahawks in a high pressure situation.
Dave isn't so sure it was the right move, because in essence the Pats were putting all their eggs in one basket expecting the defense to come through for them. Now if he used both of his timeouts then if Seattle scored then Brady would have gotten that ball back with 40 seconds or so and that is a spot that he is great in.
RJ feels it wouldn't have worked had they not scored until the 4th down, because Seattle would have runoff plenty of time and made it a one play for all at the end of the game.
Dave just wouldn't want to put his defense in the position of having to make 3 stops from the 1, but RJ wonders what the incremental gain would be by not calling timeouts and thus creating confusion for the Seahawks or just putting it on your defense. RJ feels that the chances of a turnover go up when their is confusion.
Dave states that in the NFL this year there were 109 pass thrown from the 1 yard line and none where intercepted. That also makes throwing on 2nd down more valid. RJ also wonders how many of those passes were thrown in high pressure spots with the Super Bowl on the line.
Dave doesn't like the odds of the Pats defense stopping Seattle 3 times from the one, but he does like the odds of Brady getting his hands on the ball with 40+ seconds to go. He also states that the worst thing a coach can have is to walk away from a loss with timeouts in your pocket.
Teddy states that if you needed to draft a coach for 1 game that Belichick and Carroll would go 1,2 in the draft. These are two of the best coaches in the league and even though both coaches made questionable calls at the end of the game they still knew what they are doing at that point.
