Seattle Mariners @ New York Yankees
My Pick: Seattle Mariners Team Total Under 4 Runs (-120) - L
Jonathan Loaisiga will be taking the mound for New York and he owns a 0.00 ERA overall (0.00 at home). He's only played one game thus far in the majors, but it was a solid 0 ER/5.1 inning showing at home against Tampa Bay. The Yankees had him skip Triple-A for the assignment and he didn't disappoint, showing nasty stuff and an intriguing arsenal. The 23-year-old allowed three hits while walking four and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning. It's worth noting that Loaisiga walked just four batters through 45 innings between High-A and Double-A this year. Still, it was an impressive showing under the circumstances - He induced 17 swings and misses in his 91 pitches. Today he'll take on a Seattle team that's been good this year, but has had batting struggles in recent games. Over the past seven days they own a team batting average of just .238 (19th in the league) with an OBP of .285 (25th in the league) and an SLG of .389 (19th in the league). Over their previous 5 games the Mariners have managed to surpass 3 runs just once and that was at home. It doesn't help that in recent visits to Yankee Stadium the Mariners have also struggled - failing to surpass 3 runs in any of their last six visits out East. When looking at run support for Felix Hernandez once again, see similar numbers - A team that hasn't surpassed 3 runs over his last three starts and just once in his last five. When Loaisiga does finally exit the Yankees still have a solid bullpen coming into this game with a 2.87 ERA (5th in the league). With how Seattle has been hitting the ball lately, I'd think they should be able to finish the job.
Tonight will certainly be a tougher matchup for Loaisiga then his previous. However, he has a few things going in his favor. Seattle has struggled to score runs in recent games. They've also struggled to score runs the last few times Hernandez has pitched and on top of that, the last few times they've played a game inside Yankee Stadium. We saw them do just 2 runs last night and something similar tonight wouldn't surprise me. I give the Mariners of ceiling of 3 in this one..
