Analysis: The Auburn Tigers are ranked 2 nd in the nation after last week’s crazy shakeup in the top 10. The Tigers are 5-0 on the year and are looking to make it back to the National Title game. Gus Malzahn is 16-0 ATS off a conference opponent, while the Tigers as a team are 11-1 ATS off an ATS win, but they are also 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games after allowing 20 points or less. Nick Marshall did miss a game this year, but has still thrown for 755 yards and 8 TDs, while also rushing for 392 yards and 4 more TDs this year. Cameron Artis-Payne leads the team in rushing with 594 yards while also having 5 TDs. Auburn comes in 24th in total, 72nd in passing, 15th in rushing and 15th in scoring (42 ppg). The defense for the team has been very good, ranking 14th overall, 33rd vs the pass, 14th vs the run and 9th in points allowed (14.4 ppg).
The Mississippi State Bulldogs are off an impressive home win over Texas A&M, which puts them at 5-0 on the year and has them ranked 6th in the national polls. The Bulldogs are 0-5 ATS as dogs of less than 10 in the 2nd of BB home games, but they are also 14-3 ATS in their last 17 home games vs a team with a winning road record. Dak Prescott is the leader of this offense and has put up some nice numbers this year. So far Dak has hit 63.9% of his passes for 1232 yards, with 13 TDs and just 2 INTs, while also rushing for 455 yards and 6 more TDs. He is one of the best QBs in the SEC for sure. The Bulldog offense ranks 12th in yards overall, 43rd in passing, 14th in rushing, and 13th in scoring (42.6 ppg). The defense comes in 86th in yards allowed, 126th vs the pass, 12th vs the run and 23rd in points (19.4 ppg)
Pick: I love the Auburn Tigers in this one. I know that Mississippi State is off the huge win vs Texas A&M and before that they had a huge road win vs LSU, but this is a different animal that they will face in this one. We also take note that in those last two wins vs LSU and the Aggies, the Bulldogs allowed 33 combined 4th quarter points. They had big leads in both which is something that won’t happen and I expect them to again wilt away in the 4th quarter vs an Auburn offense that just keeps coming at you. The Bulldogs just won’t have the depth to play a full 4 quarters in this one. Auburn averages 42 ppg on offense and just hung 41 up on a very good LSU defense, but this team also knows how to play defense as they have allowed just 14.4 ppg on the year and I feel they can contain this Bulldog offense that is good but not great. Another sign that I see that makes me feel that MSU is not a top 5 or even top 10 team is the game vs UAB, in which they allowed 34 points and were outgained by 32 yards and that was at home. The Bulldogs have allowed 29 or more points in 3 of their last 4 games and just won have enough, especially late, to keep this one close. Auburn may win by DD.
