Saturday college football and we will see the Texas Longhorns take on the Kansas Jayhawks at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas. The game has a start time of 4:00 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on Fox Sports 1. Current Vegas odds have the Longhorns listed as 12 point favorites, while the total is set at 41.5.
Analysis: Mack Brown has stepped down as long time Texas Longhorns coach and in steps Charlie Strong and with him he brings a toughness that the Longhorns have been missing the last few years. Charlie has made a few dismissals and suspensions already and while it may not be a help to the team this year he is setting the standard for years to come. The season started out good for the Longhorns as they beat North Texas 38-7 in their opener, but then they were crushed at home by BYU and then lost another home game to the UCLA Bruins. The Longhorns have also lost QB David Ash along the way and while Tyrone Swoops has been decent so for, he just isn’t the threat at QB that Ash was. The offense for the Longhorns has really struggled overall this year, as they come in ranking 114th in total offense (311 ypg), 103rd in passing (187.3 ypg) and 109th in scoring (20.7 ppg). The defense has been strong though as they come in ranked 26th in yards allowed (323.3 ypg), 9th in pass defense (140.7 ypg) and 52nd in points allowed (22.7 ppg).
The Kansas Jayhawks had themselves a rough 3-9 year in 2013, but that was still as many wins as they had the previous two years combined. This year Charlie Weis may have his best team yet, but there are still concerns with depth, as just 32 lettermen return. The Jayhawks have had a good start to their year as they are 2-1 out the gate, with their lone loss coming 2 weeks ago on the road at Duke. Still this is a team that will struggle this year. The offense is still poor as they come in ranked 93rd in total offense (374.3 ypg), 108th in passing (174 ypg) and 111th in scoring (20.3 ppg). Montell Cozart has not been all that good behind center for the Jayhawks as he has completed just 54.8% of his passes for 511 yards, with 5 TDs and 3 INTs. The defense for Kansas has not played all that well as they come in ranked 80th in yards allowed (403.7 ypg) and 83rd in points allowed (26.3 ppg).
Pick: I love the Under in this game. The Longhorns have really become a conservative offensive squad and that is mainly due to not have David Ash at QB. The longhorns do not mind playing conservative on offense, because they have a defense that will shut most teams down this year. The Longhorns had their issues vs BYU, but did hold UCLA to just 20 points, and remember that on Thursday night that UCLA offense hung 62 points on Arizona State. The Jayhawks are a very poor offensive team that has aveaged just 20.3 ppg thus far and they are also are a run based offense that will help chew up clock in this one. They are also a conservative team and can slow down a very mediocre Texas offense here. Both teams should run allot and both defesnes should play well as this one is played in the lower 30s at best here.
