Analysis: The Yankees come in off a rough trip to Houston, in which they went just 1-2. They will now be looking for the biggest offseason signing, Masahiro Tanaka, to get them to .500 on the year. This will be Tanaka's first appearance in the states and he did pitch well in preseason, with a 2.14 ERA. Last year Tanaka was an amazing 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA for the Tohoku Rakuten of Japan's Pacific League. Tanka will have to pitch well for the Yanks tonight as they offense has been non-existent so far, scoring just 2.33 rpg and hit .206 in the early going. New York does lead the series 36-19 over the last three seasons, while Yankees 2B Brian Roberts is 6-for-13 with a home run, a double and four walks in his career against McGowan.
The Blue Jays come in off a 4 game split down in Tampa. For the series the Jays hit .205 and scored just 2.75 rpg. They did hit 4 homers in the series, which is an accomplishment vs a good Rays squad and in that ball park. Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion is 1-for-12 with four strikeouts on the season. The pitching was not so good for the Jays in the series, as they posted a 4.76 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP, while also posting just 8 total K's in the 4 game set. Tonight Dustin McGowan gets the ball, who pitched just 25 innings out of the pen last year and hasn't mad a start since 2011. McGowan is 2-2 with a 5.47 ERA in 13 appearances (8 starts) vs the Yankees, while in his last 5 starts vs them he is 0-2 with a 7.01 ERA.
Pick: I Like the Under in this game. Masahiri Tanka begins his big league career and the first time through the league it should be very hard for hitters to gauge him, which should means teams will score less off off him than they will later in the year when they will face him for the 2nd or 3rd times. It also helps that the Jays have just just .205 through their first 4 games, so they are not swinging good bats right now. McGowan has struggled vs the Yanks over his career, but hasn't faced them since 2011 and this is a different yanks lineup that he has faced before, so he should have a good showing tonight. Very hard to expect more than 6 or 7 runs in this one.
