College football on Saturday and we will see the Western Michigan Broncos travel to Kinnick Stadium in Iowa to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes. The start time is 12:00 pm (Eastern) and the game will be televised on the Big 10 Network. Current Odds have Iowa listed as 16 point favorites, while the total sits at 50.5.
Analysis: The Western Michigan Broncos are off to a rough 0-3 start and it may not get better after visiting the 2-1 Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday. The Broncos have struggled on both sides of the ball, checking in at 99th in total offense (344 ypg) and 108th in scoring (17.7 ppg), while allowing 405 ypg (75th) and 30.3 ppg (89th). Just not good at all. Senior QB Tyler Van Tubbergen has been able to surpass the 200-yard mark through the air in two-straight games, but is off a rough game vs Northwestern, finishing with 202 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception on 16-of-41 passing. WMU has a promising freshman wideout in Corey Davis, who caught five passes for 112 yards and a touchdown last week. The rookie has tallied 324 yards on 21 receptions through the first three games of his career. A big problem on the other side of the ball is their run defense that has allowed 245 ypg (114th)so far. That won’t bode well vs Iowa’s power rushing attack. The Broncos have won both previous encounters that both took place in Iowa City. The series has been idle since WMU's 28-19 win over the Hawkeyes on Nov. 17, 2007.
Iowa suffered a 30-27 setback to Northern Illinois in its season opener before bouncing back with victories over Missouri State (28-14) and Iowa State (27-21) to climb over the .500 mark. Last week was Iowa’s 600th victory of all-time. Iowa's of is led by RB’s Mark Weisman and Damon Bullock. Weisman is third among all FBS players in rushing yards with 425 after he surpassed the century mark for the third straight contest and gained a career-high 35 times for 145 yards against ISU last week. Bullock provides a speedy change of pace which keeps opposing defenses off-balance. The tandem has been a big reason why the Hawkeyes produce 239.3 ypg on the ground. First-year QB Jake Rudock has also contributed to the running game with four touchdowns and 63 yards in three games. Defensively, Iowa is a very solid unit with only 318 yards and 21 points allowed per game, while allowing just 1 TD i 4 redzone trips by their opponents. Senior linebacker Anthony Hitchens leads the team with 31 tackles along with three tackles for loss and a sack.
Pick: I will go with the Broncos in this one. The Hawkeys are coming off a hard fought win vs instate rival Iowa state and they have their Big 10 season opener up next week vs Minnesota, so this could be a bit of a flat spot for them. The Iowa running game should rule this one, but will also limit their scoring chances by eating clock. The Broncos are not really a bad team and they have enough offense to get the back door cover here. This is just too many points for Iowa to be laying here.
