College Football Week 2 and we will see the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers travel to Mobile, Alabama to take on the South Alabama Jaguars. The start time is 7:30 pm (Eastern) and the game will be televised on ESPN3. Current Odds have Western Kentucky listed as 8 point favorites, while the total sits at 55.5.
Analysis: Western Kentucky started the year with an impressive 35-26 win over Kentucky on a neutral field, but they couldn't follow that up with a solid outing as they were crushed by Tennessee, 52-20 in game 2 last week. The Hilltoppers jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but it didn't last long as the Volunteers produced 31 unanswered points, in a stretch that saw WKU have five turnovers in 6 offensive plays. WKU held a 393-382 edge in total yards of offense over Tennessee despite losing the contest and were even better in their opener, amassing 487 yards of total offense versus Kentucky. Senior tailback Antonio Andrews is averaging 105 yards per game and 6.4 yards per carry in 2013, after putting up 3,161 all-purpose yards last year, which was the second-highest total in FBS history to 1988 Heisman Trophy Winner Barry Sanders. Defensively WKU didn't give up too many yards to Tennessee, however, it did allow Tennessee to average 5.3 yards per carry on 45 attempts and score touchdowns on 5-of-8 red zone trips. This will be the first-ever meeting between these new conference rivals.
South Alabama had a tough loss to Southern Utah in its season opener, but they bounced back last week with a 41-39 victory over Tulane in a thriller. The Jaguars denied a two-point conversion attempt by the Green Wave with 1:19 left and recovered an onside kick to clinch their inaugural win of 2013. Offensively the Jaguras have been solid in the early going, putting up 31 ppg and 400 ypg so far. Senior QB Ross Metheny and is off a game in which he completed 19-of-30 attempts for 290 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Metheny also produced a team-high 75 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. USA's defense picked off Tulane's Nick Montana when the Green Wave attempted to tie the score with a two-point conversion late in the game. The Jaguars registered two takeaways in the contest and limited their opponent to only 45 rushing yards on 27 attempts.
Pick: Will be brief with this one, but I do like the Jaguars. WKU is coming off a couple of tough bouts with SEC foes and must now travel to take on an improving USA squad, that has played two tight games thus far. The USA offense is improving and should put enough points on the board to keep this one close.
