The Kentucky Derby start time and official post time is 6:24pm ET on Saturday from Churchill Downsin Louisville, Kentucky.
Liaison (50-1): Record: 3-0-1 in 7 Races. Trainer: Bob Baffert. Sire: Indian Charlie. Dam: Galloping Gal. Liaison showed quality last year when after a maiden win (on dirt) he went to Hollywood Park (synthetic) and promptly won the Real Quiet routing. He validated that by next winning the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity, often a springboard to big things on the Triple Crown trail. It doesn’t hurt that his trainer, Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, has captured the roses three times (Silver Charm, Real Quiet, War Emblem). While Indian Charlie’s progeny are best known for their work at middle distances, there is hope that the stamina on the bottom of Liaison’s pedigree will help him stay the trip. Winless this year, he is considered questionable at 10 furlongs.
Trinniberg (50-1): Record: 3-2-0 in 7 Races. Trainer: Bisnath Parboo. Sire: Teu?esberg. Dam:Bella Dorato. Trinniberg has won both of his starts this year in Grade 3 stakes over seven furlongs – the Swale Stakes by six lengths at Gulfstream Park on March 10 and the Bay Shore Stakes by three lengths at Aqueduct on April 7. He led throughout both races, a style he has displayed throughout his sevenrace career. He was an accomplished 2-year-old, winning his debut at Calder and placing in two graded stakes for sprinters in New York in the summer and fall – the Grade 1 Hopeful at Saratoga and the Grade 2 Nashua Stakes at Belmont Park. Trinniberg is bred speed on speed and has been on the lead at the pace call in all but one of his races. He’s never attempted a route before, and his pedigree states that a mile may be his limit. You’ll know him early in the Derby, but he is highly questionable to last the whole trip.
