The Current Layout of Legal Sports Betting in the US

The Current Layout of Legal Sports Betting in the US

Ever since the Supreme Court made its historic decision to reverse its stance on sports betting, the country has seen a dramatic rise in interest in the practice. While certain states allow all forms of betting, others may have restrictions, and a handful of states want nothing to do with it. This is the current layout of legal sports betting in the US.

Completely or Partially Legal

Arizona

On Tax Day in 2021, Arizona got the green light for sports betting with 20 established operators inside the state.

Arkansas

In-person betting got the nod of approval in July 2021, while online sportsbooks got the go-ahead a few months into 2022.

Colorado

It is legal to use sportsbooks in Colorado; however, there are restrictions for collegiate athletics. You can place a wager on individual games, but no player props are allowed.

Connecticut

Sports betting has been legal in Connecticut for over a year. Hopefully, the people are cashing their winning “over” tickets for the season equal wins for UConn football.

Delaware

Many sports bettors wanted to magically whisk away to Delaware since it was the first state to jump at the chance when the US Supreme Court made online sports betting legal in 2018. Unfortunately, you can’t bet on Joe Flacco’s alma mater, considering you cannot bet on college athletics.

Illinois

In a state filled with sports history, Illinois made sports betting legal before the pandemic put the games on pause for several months. Illinois is also stingy regarding college sports because you can only place those bets (sans player props) in person at the local sportsbook.

Indiana

The Hoosier State was quick on the trigger regarding sports betting, legalizing it in 2019. There aren’t many in-person or online betting restrictions, except for those pesky collegiate player props.

Iowa

Iowa has the same rules as Indiana, allowing those in the state to cash out on Iowa “under” for three years.

Kansas

Kansas is one of the most recent states to welcome online betting.

Louisiana

Since October 2021, you could geaux place bets in person. And in January 2022, you could place wagers online.

Maryland

Maryland voters voiced their interest in sports betting after the 2020 election. Baltimore capitalized on the craze by opening sportsbooks in the area.

Michigan

Michigan is another state that didn’t wait too long to join the parade, as Governor Whitmer signed the bill to legalize it at the end of 2019.

Mississippi

State Representative Richard Bennett made the first legal sports bet on August 1, 2018, making Mississippi the third state to provide legal sports betting.

Missouri

Maybe Missouri needs Marty and Wendy Byrde to talk to the people in charge in Missouri, considering the legislation frequently hits dead ends. The Liberty Bell needs sports betting, people!

Montana

Along with finding dinosaur bones and visiting Yellowstone National Park, you can add sports betting to your “things to do” list for Montana. The weird catch about Montana is that the state lottery controls what sports and wagers you can place.

Nebraska

Excluding the banned collegiate athletics, you can only bet in Nebraska if you do it live and in living color.

Nevada

Nevada without gambling is like a Michael Bay movie without explosions—it won’t happen.

New Hampshire

The Granite State jumped on the sports betting bandwagon early in 2020, allowing mobile betting. You can chalk up New Hampshire as another state wary of college betting, banning all in-state games and props.

New Jersey

New Jersey has long lobbied for legalizing legalized gambling and was instrumental in the lawsuit resulting in the Supreme Court’s decision. As a result, they wasted little time following the vote to legalize sports betting, operating in 2018.

However, New Jersey is another Metro-Atlantic state with college regulations banning in-state games from their books. If you live in New Jersey and want to bet on Rutgers, you can give Tony Soprano a ring.

New York

New York has been interested in sports betting since 2013, introducing a bill back then. But it wasn’t until January 2022 that you could place a mobile bet. You cannot bet on Jim Boeheim’s Orange in the state, as it’s banned like many other states.

North Carolina

The Cherokee Tribe completely controls any gambling operation in North Carolina. You can bet on any sport or horse race since March 2021. Since the Tribe has a grip on the state’s gambling scene, there isn’t mobile sports betting.

Ohio

While it’s officially legal, it won’t be until 2023 until Ohioans can place a bet.

Oregon

Oregon dipped its toes in sports betting, taking legal bets on occasion for various contests since 2019, barring college games.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania understands the benefits of permitting sports betting in their state, legalizing it in 2018 with minimal restrictions.

Rhode Island

It’s another Metro-Atlantic/New England state, which means a “yes” on sports betting except for in-state collegiate endeavors.

Tennessee

There has been little restriction for betting in Tennessee since 2021, as it’s prominent online and in-person. College player props are their only concern.

Virginia

Virginia follows with most states by allowing sports betting, with in-state college affairs being a no-go.

Washington

Washington is like North Carolina because the local tribes control everything, meaning mobile wagering isn’t an option.

West Virginia

You’re free to bet as you please in West Virginia.

Wisconsin

You can make in-person and online wagers in Wisconsin, as long as it’s at an Oneida Nation locale.

Wyoming

All is well for the people in Wyoming, as you can place any wager in person.

Not Feeling Lucky

Alabama

Although Alabama lives and breathes college football, you cannot bet on any Iron Bowl matchups.

Alaska

When life was normal for those two months in 2020, Alaska tried to get a bill passed for legalizing sports betting. But the pandemic made the legislation an afterthought, and the bill expired.

California

During the 2022 midterm elections, California tried to legalize sports betting, letting the Golden State people voice their opinion on in-person and online sports betting. Even with massive spending on advertising in support of both propositions, the people weren’t in favor of gambling in-person or online, leaving the most populous state in the country in the dark.

Georgia

Another SEC state that won’t allow you to place a bet. Georgia tried to get something through this year but came up short. They’ll give it another shot in 2023.

Hawaii

The only time Hawaii tried to get sports betting legalized was in 2019 when a new corporation was going to regulate it. However, that did not go over well, and they haven’t gone back to the well since.

Idaho

Positively nothing to report for Idaho, a big nothing burger.

Minnesota

Fortunately for the fine people of Minnesota, they recently approved legislation to legalize sports betting in August 2022. But there are no rumblings on when that will come to fruition.

Utah

Yeah, this isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

It’s Complicated

Betting in Florida, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Massachusetts has been approved, is waiting for launch, or has some complicated hurdles to overcome before all is clear. Whereas betting in Vermont, Texas, South Carolina, North Dakota, and Kentucky remains illegal, legislation is in motion.
