The TCU Horned Frogs host the Texas Longhorns in college football action on Saturday. The game is scheduled for a noon start time and it will be televised nationally on ABC. Currently the betting odds for the game have TCU favored by more than a couple of touchdowns to pick up the win.
TCU is one of the best offenses in the country, but their defense might keep them from making the college football playoff. The Horned Frogs survived a 55-52 game at Texas Tech last week and gave up 37 to SMU the week before. That defense needs to get things figured out as there are several landmines left on the schedule where one or two stops could be the difference between an unbeaten season and being on the outside looking in.
Texas is certainly on hard times, the Longhorns are 1-3 on the season and it doesn’t look like they will be piling up wins anytime soon. The Horns have to play TCU, Oklahoma and Kansas State the next three games and also end the season with games against West Virginia, Texas Tech and Baylor. Yikes. Much like TCU, the defense for Texas has been a bit of a problem. The Longhorns were hammered by Notre Dame and gave up 45 to Cal at home, Texas just isn’t built to out-score teams while posting a ton of points.
TCU hasn’t won two straight over Texas since 1958-1959. Trevone Boykin has been whipping the ball all over the yard and through four games already has 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns. TCU’s signal caller ranks second in the country in total offense, averaging 415 yards per game and he’s thrown for at least 450 yards in two straight victories. And despite scoring 51 points per game this year, TCU ranks fifth nationally in scoring with Baylor and Texas Tech both ahead of them.
Texas looks like they’re a year away, if Charlie Strong is allowed to have that much time. The Horns have a dynamic young quarterback in Jerrod Heard, but the Horns just don’t have enough around him to compete at the highest level with the Big 12’s best. Texas will score in this one, but TCU is going to hammer down.
