Sunday Night Baseball Washington Nationals vs Atlanta Braves Free Pick

Sunday night baseball and we will see the Washington Nationals take on the Atlanta Braves in game 3 of their 3 game series from Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia. First pitch is scheduled for an 8:05 PM (Eastern) start time and the game will be televised on ESPN.

Current Odds

Washington        +109
Atlanta               -119

Over/ Under: 7 U -120

Analysis: The Washington National have a 4.5 game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, but really they haven't been playing great ball of late, as they are just 6-7 in their last 13 games. The Nats did win last night's game, but are still just 10-25 in their last 35 games vs the Braves. The Nats are a decent offensive team, as they come in ranked 10th in the league in scoring (4.21 rpg), 18th in hitting (.250) and 15th in homers (96). The pitching has been outstanding, as they come in ranked 3rd in ERA (3.14) and 4th in WHIP (1.19). Getting the ball for Washington tonight will be Gio Gonzalez, who is 6-8 with a 4.01 ERA overall, while on the road he is 3-5 with a 3.51 ERA. In his last 5 starts vs the Braves he has gone 0-4 with a 4.65 ERA and is just 2-4 with a 4.83 ERA in 7 career starts in this park.

The Braves took game one of this series, but they are still a team that is reeling, as they have won just 1 of their last 9 games. The good news is that the Braves are 6-1 in their last 6 home games vs the Nats and they have won their last 7 games vs Washington when the Nats have thrown Gio at them. The Braves are a poo offensive team, as they come in ranked 28th in the league in scoring (3.74 rpg), 22nd in hitting (.245) and 20th in homers (93). The pitching has been very solid, as they come in ranked 8th in ERA (3.41), 16th in WHIP (1.28) and 1st in quality starts (80). Getting the ball for the Braves tonight will be Alex Wood, who is 7-9 with a 3.20 ERA overall, while as a starter he has gone just 4-8, but with a solid 2.96 ERA. Alex is 1-1 with a 1.57 ERA in 4 career starts vs the Nats.

Pick: I will look to the Under in this game. Gio Gonzalez has struggle this year and has struggled with the Braves in his career, but Gio does have a nice 1.35 ERA in his last 4 starts on the road and he will be facing a Braves team that has averaged just 3.86 rpg at home, while in their last 10 games they have put up just 2.6 rpg. Alez wood has pitched well vs the Nats in his career and he has a solid 2.96 ERA as a starter this year, so I look for him to keep the Nats in check here. Gio's 9 road starts have averaged just 5.56 rpg, while Alex' 7 home starts have put up just 6.29 rpg, while his night starts have averaged 6.22 rpg. ESPN Sunday night games tend to be low scoring and I will look that way with a couple of pitchers that are used to low scoring games in this situation.
