Kansas last attempt at a conference win comes today when it battles West Virginia at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown (2:30pm ET start time). While few expected much of anything out of Kansas this season, most did expect it to improve under new head coach Charlie Weis. From a record standpoint, the Jayhawks have not done that, though, as they need a win this afternoon in order to match last season’s two wins.

Kansas opened the season with a 31-17 victory against FCS school South Dakota State, but it has since lost 10 straight games. However, it could be argued the Jayhawks are an improved team as they have tested several opponents, including TCU, Northern Illinois, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Texas Tech.

Kansas hopes to do the same today against a West Virginia team that secured a bowl eligible sixth win last week with a 31-24 triumph at Iowa State. Prior to defeating the Cyclones, the Mountaineers had lost five straight conference games to give them a 5-5 overall record and a 2-5 league record in their inaugural Big 12 season.

Certainly West Virginia, despite its late season slump, is the better team in this match up, but, frankly, the 1-10 Jayhawks have more motivation. Kansas is, no doubt, desperate to avoid a winless conference run and it has shown enough on a handful of occasion to make one believe Weis’ will get a solid effort out of his troops.

Will a solid effort from Kansas result in a win over West Virginia, though? No, but it should result in the Jayhawks staying within 20 points of the Mountaineers final score.
