No. 8 South Carolina welcomes SEC rival Arkansas to Columbia today as it looks to close out conference play with a win. Start time in this East versus West showdown is set for 12:00pm ET at Williams-Brice Stadium; the game will be broadcast live on CBS. It has been a miserable season for Arkansas; however, the team has played better of late, winning three of its last four games to improve to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in conference action. The Razorbacks also have an opportunity to salvage, at least in part, what most thought would be another soiled campaign as they close out the season with three league games.
In order for that to happen, though, Arkansas must find a way to win this afternoon in Columbia. Frankly, that seems highly unlikely. Not only is South Carolina the better team (the Gamecocks enter today’s game with a 7-2 record and a 5-2 tally against SEC opposition), it has had a week to prepare for a Razorbacks team that has struggled to put points on the scoreboard.
Arkansas comes into this game averaging 26.1 points per game, and an even worse 22 points per contest in conference games, despite a 49-7 blitzing of Kentucky. South Carolina fields one of the nation’s top defenses, ranking 20th and 12th in points and yards per game allowed respectively.
Tennessee did rack up 35 points at Williams-Brice Stadium two weekends ago in a three point loss to the Gamecocks, but Arkansas’ offense will not be mistaken for the Volunteers any time soon.
The Razorbacks have dominated this series of late, winning and covering in five of the last six meetings between the two schools; however, it has been quite sometime since the gap between the two programs was this wide in South Carolina’s favor.
