The San Diego Padres took game one of their three game set in Miami last night, clubbing the Marlins 9-2 to get back to the break even point. San Diego will shoot for the series win this evening as they square off against the Marlins at 7:10pm ET at Marlins Park. The latest MLB Free Picks and Odds from 5Dimes have the Padres listed as a -118 moneyline favorite ($118 wins $100) and the Over/Under set at 7.5 runs (Under is presently favored at -130 odds). Miami is drawing a +108 line to even the series at a game apiece.

 

Miami owns an abysmal 27-51 record, but it had been playing some decent baseball heading into last night’s opener with the Padres. The Marlins had won five of six after limiting their opposition to an average of 2.2 runs per game; however, San Diego unloaded on them last night.

 

The Padres tagged Ricky Nolasco for 11 hits and five runs in the first five innings and they added four more hits and three more runs against Miami’s relief staff. Meanwhile, San Diego’s Edinson Volquez tamed the Marlins lineup, striking out eight and yielded just two runs in six innings of work.

 

Tonight’s score figures to be much lower with Eric Stults and Jacob Turner dealing for the Padres and Marlins, respectively.

 

The left handed Stults brings a 3.20 ERA and 1.09 WHIP to the hill tonight, and he has been outstanding since the end of May. Stults has averaged 7.1 innings in his last six starts and he has not allowed more than two earned runs in a game since a May 24^th appearance in Arizona. Consequently, the average runs scored in his last six outings is a miniscule 3.8.

 

Turner, a 22 year old right hander out of St. Charles, Missouri, has been almost as effective as surging Stults. In five starts Turner has produced a 1.97 ERA and 1.16 WHIP and he lasted at least six innings in all but one those appearances. Turner is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in two home starts this season.

 

Notable Trends: The Under is 7-1 in the Marlins last eight games as a home dog against a left handed pitcher.
