The 2012 S.D. County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl will feature a showdown between independent BYU and Mountain West member San Diego State. The bowl meeting between the Cougars and Aztecs is scheduled to kickoff at 8:00pm ET on Thursday, December 20th at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California; the game will be broadcast live on ESPN. BYU did not have the kind of season it had hoped, but the Cougars finished a respectable 7-5 nonetheless. Bronco Mendenhall’s troops also played a grueling slate, squaring off against bowl teams in Boise State, Utah State, Oregon State, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, and San Jose State.
Despite some turnover issues and an inability to establish some level of consistency throughout the regular season, the Cougars do enter this bowl contest with a measure of momentum. BYU closed out the regular season on a 3-1 run after knocking off Georgia Tech, Idaho, and New Mexico State.
San Diego State put together a fantastic season in its first year as a member of the Mountain West, posting a 9-3 overall record and 7-1 league mark. The Aztecs started the season slow by losing three of their first five games (Washington, San Jose State, Fresno State), but they enter the Poinsettia Bowl riding a seven game win streak that featured wins over Nevada and Boise State.
