Preakness Stakes Longshots Ria Antonia

The Preakness Stakes, one of horse racing’s premier events, gets underway tonight with a start time of 6.18 pm (ET). The event will take place at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. There are a few Longshots in the event, including Ria Antonia, who has been installed as 50/1 Odds to win the Preakness Stakes.

Ria Antonia Record: 2-1-0 in 8 Races. Trainer: Tom Amoss. Jockey: Calvin Borel Sire: Rockport Harbor Dam: Beer Baroness. Best Beyer Speed: 85

Ria Antonia is the 54th female horse to try her luck in the Preakness Stakes, but the only thing is that just 5 of the previous 53 have won it it. Ria has 8 races in her career and her first win was at Woodbine in 2013, which was her 2nd race ever. Since then she has finished higher than 4th just twice in her last 6 races, so she is not coming in with a whole lot of momentum.

Riding Ria Antonia will be Calvin Borel, who won the Preakness back in 2009, while riding Rachel Alexandra, who was the last filly to win the race. Borel was the regular rider for Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year who beat males three times in an undefeated eight-race campaign. Borel is the 45th North American rider to reach 4,000 career wins and was voted winner of the 2010 George Woolf Memorial Award by his fellow riders, recognizing his success and character. He was elected to the Hall Of Fame in 2013.

Tom Amoss was brought in to replace Bob Baffert as trainer after Ria Antonia had a disappointing 6th place finish at Kentucky Oaks on May 2nd. Amoss has won more than 2,900 races and nearly $78 million in purse earnings since taking out his trainer’s license in 1987.  Amoss’ first winner came at Sportsman’s Park in 1987. He has been the leading trainer at Indiana Downs, Kentucky Downs, Churchill Downs and Ellis Park, and was inducted into the Fair Grounds Hall of Fame in 1999.

Not allot to e excited about here, although having a jockey that has won this even does help. Ria Antonia hasn't won since capturing the Breeder's Cup Fillies Juvenile as a 2-year-old, and will have her work cut out for her if she is to make any noise in this race.
