The Preakness Stakes, one of horse racing’s premier events, gets underway tonight with a start time of 6.18 pm (ET). The event will take place at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. There are a few Longshots in the event, including Kid Cruz, who has been installed as 20/1 Odds to win the Preakness Stakes.

Kid Cruz has had 5 races in his career and 3 of them have been wins. He comes in having won two races in a row, including back on April 19th right here at Pimlico. Kid Cruz is the son of 1999 Belmont Stakes and Travers winner Lemon Drop Kid, but still this wil be his firsat graded-stakes race and he comes in with his highest Beyer speed of just 91.
Riding kid Cruz will be Julian Pimentel, who was 3rd in the Maryland standings in 2012, a year after he finished 11th in the Preakness, while riding Norman Asbjornson. Pimentel reached a personal best with 146 wins in 2011, earning his 1,000th career victory on Sept. 19 of that year with Pet Me Pet Me at Delaware Park. He also ranked in the top 10 at Monmouth Park and The Meadowlands from 2001-05.
Linda Rice is the trainer of Kid Cruz, who will be just the 15th female trainer to have a horse in the Preakness. Won her 1,000th career race with Sextant on July 16, 2011, closing day of the Belmont Park spring-summer meet, to tie Pletcher for the trainer’s title. Rice also tied for the trainer’s crown at Aqueduct’s 2011 spring meet.
Going for him is the fact that Kid Cruz has great closing speed and he has won on this track before, but still overall this is not a fast horse and this will also be his first graded stakes event that he will take part it. Pimentel is hoping for a fast pace early, and will look to pick off as many as he can down the stretch.
