The Arizona State Sun Devils are on the road in Pac 12 Football action, taking on the seventh-ranked UCLA Bruins. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on FOX. Currently the betting odds for the game have the Bruins favored by a couple of touchdowns in this one.
Arizona State looked like a potential college football playoff team on paper before the season. Now the Sun Devils are 2-2 and have a ton of tough games left on the schedule. The toughest game left could be this week, though, as UCLA has proven its worth so far, scoring almost 38 points a game and having a sound defense.
The Bruins own two straight wins over ranked opponents, beating BYU and Arizona. Last week’s game saw UCLA hang 56 on the Wildcats, they scored 42 first-half points and got three rushing touchdowns in the second quarter alone. Paul Perkins looks like a potential Heisman candidate this season, he’s rushed for better than 500 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 6.3 yards per attempt this season. Nobody has been able to slow him down, that will have to be Arizona State’s top priority.
True freshman quarterback Josh Rosen has thrown four interceptions this season, he has seven touchdowns as well. His main target has been Jordan Payton with 19 catches and three touchdowns.
Arizona State has not done a good job at slowing other teams down, opponents are actually scoring almost 28 points per game against them this season, nearly a field goal more than what the Sun Devils are actually putting up themselves.
The Sun Devils are just 3-22 all-time against AP Top 10 opponents on the road, the last win coming over No. 6 Oregon in 2002. Since then they’ve dropped all 10 games against Top 10 schools on the road.
Meanwhile, UCLA has been dominant against the Pac 12 South under head coach Jim Mora, winning 14 of 16 games.
UCLA should have no problem scoring points, their defense will determine the overall outcome of the contest.
