The 11th ranked UCLA open their conference home slate tonight with a showdown against the scuffling California Golden Bears. This evening's meeting between UCLA and Cal is scheduled to get underway at 10:30pm ET at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena; it will be broadcast live on ESPN2. Turning around a down program is a difficult task in and of itself, but the degree of difficulty is only compounded when three of a team's first five opponents are ranked. Cal and its new Head Coach Sonny Dykes experienced this first hand as the Golden Bears opened against Northwestern and met Ohio State and Oregon before the calendar even changed to October.
Unfortunately for Cal, which enters tonight's game with a 1-4 record, the hits just keep on coming. On tap this evening is 11th ranked UCLA, which owns a 4-0 record and road wins over Nebraska and Utah.
Brett Hundley and company easily dispatched their first four challengers, taking out Nevada, Nebraska, New Mexico State, and Utah by an average of 25.3 points per game. UCLA's offense led the way in each of the team's first four outings, averaging 48 points and 562 yards per game.
The Bruins defense, while not the strength of the team, did its part as well. UCLA allowed just 20.3 points and 351 yards per game en route to its perfect start.
Cal figures to post plenty of yards in tonight's game, as it always does, but its troubles at crossing the goal line as well as its inability to keep the opposition out of the end zone should continue too.
The Golden Bears are -7 in turnover margin and they rank 100th in the FBS in red zone scoring percentage at 73.3 percent (includes field goals), and those deficiencies have shown no signs of going away anytime soon.
Notable Trends: The Bruins are 5-0 both straight up and against the spread in their last five games as a home favorite with a total of 54.5 or more points.
