While Oklahoma State was expected to challenge for the Big 12 title, few expected them to win it. In fact, the Cowboys nearly earned a spot in the BCS National Championship Game after finishing the regular season with an 11-1 record. Despite the Pokes incredible 2012 finish, Oklahoma State Cowboys 2013 BCS National Championship Odds are less than favorable. The loss of big name players like Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon has prompted the odds makers to make Oklahoma State an 80-1 national title long shot. The Cowboys are drawing 22-1 odds to win the Big 12 conference championship.
Were it not for a late November collapse at Iowa State, Mike Gundy’s Cowboys would have earned a spot in the BCS National Championship Game opposite LSU. The loss to the Cyclones happened, though, and Oklahoma State was relegated to a Fiesta Bowl showdown with No. 4 Stanford. The Cowboys beat the Cardinal 41-38 in overtime to secure a No. 3 finish in the final BCS standings.
Unfortunately for Gundy, five offensive starters from that team, including the two most important ones, Weeden and Blackmon, are gone to the NFL. However, Gundy has done a superb job of acquiring talent in his time at Stillwater, and the team could be in position to pull off another surprise this season. The Cowboys will host four of their six most difficult opponents, which means road games at Kansas State and Oklahoma could prove critical in how the conference standings shake out.
