The ATP’s top ranked player, Novak Djokovic, will take aim at a third consecutive Australian Open tile when the event gets underway tomorrow in Melbourne. The latest 2013 Australian Open Odds have Djokovic listed as a -110 moneyline favorite to win the tournament. Djokovic is scheduled to begin play at approximately 7:00pm ET tomorrow evening (11am Monday Melbourne time) against France’s Paul –Henri Mathieu.
Novak Djokovic held off hard charges by Roger Federer and Andy Murray late last season to retain his No. 1 ranking in the ATP standings. The Serbian defeated Federer in the finals of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in Great Britian, his final tournament of the season (November), and he knocked off Murray in the finals at Shanghai in early October.
Djokovic finished the year with a 75-12 match record and he garnered six singles titles in 18 tournaments played. Among his 2012 titles were the Australian Open; Djokovic also reached the finals at Roland Garros (Nadal) and the U.S. Open (Murray).
With Rafael Nadal sitting out this year’s event, Djokovic’s biggest competition figures to come from the previously mentioned duo of Federer and Murray. The Serbian owns a 10-7 record opposite Murray and 2-0 mark against the Scot at the Australian Open. Djokovic topped Murray 6-3, 3-6, 6-7, 6-1, 7-5 in the semis at Melbourne last year and he defeated him in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 in the 2011 Australian Open final.
Djokovic is 13-16 lifetime against Federer but he is 2-1 against the Swiss Master in Australian Open play. The pair last met in Melbourne in the 2011 semifinals with Djokovic topping Fed 7-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Djokovic, a three time Australian Open champion (2008, 2011, 2012), owns five career Grand Slam titles (2011 Wimbledon, 2011 U.S. Open).
