North Carolina is coming off huge wins over rivals Duke and North Carolina State last week, a pair of higher scoring contests. Now the Tar Heels have to find a way to get up against a struggling Notre Dame team tonight.
The Irish are just 5-7 in league play and near the bottom of the ACC standings. They’re without the team’s best player in Bonzie Colson, he was averaging better than 21 points and 10 rebounds per game before being injured. He was a legitimate threat to win ACC Player of the Year honors and the Irish were 11-3 through 14 games before he went down. Without him they have really struggled, winning just four of 11 games and stumbling to seven straight defeats at one point in conference play.
UNC beat Notre Dame 69-68 the first time. The Irish hit 10 3-pointers and out-rebounded the Heels but couldn’t get it done. ND has multiple chances on the final possession to win the game, but the ball would not find its way to the bottom of the net. That effort was great for Mike Brey’s team, but going on the road and bringing that same intensity won’t be easy. Carolina has three tough road games the remainder of the season, plus a home date against Miami coming up. They have to take care of games like this when they are at home.
