While many are excited about this year’s Tar Heel team, which will be guided by former Southern Miss head coach Larry Fedora, it will not see postseason action thanks to a one year ban issued by the NCAA infractions committee. Still, North Carolina could win the Coastal Division, which remains a realistic possibility according to the latest North Carolina Tar Heels 2012 Season Odds. UNC is drawing 5-2 odds ($100 to win $250) to unseat last year’s champion Virginia Tech.
So why are so many so high on a program that finished 7-6 a season ago and is 1-4 in its last five bowl appearances? For a few reasons. First, Larry Fedora is an exceptional coach as evidenced by his 34-19 record at Southern Miss. Second, the Tar Heels return seven starters on offense, including quarterback Bryn Renner and running back Giovani Bernard, and six on defense. And finally, UNC should benefit greatly from a soft schedule.
The Tar Heels avoid Florida State and Clemson out of the Atlantic and they get, arguably, their two toughest division opponents, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech, at home. UNC’s two biggest road hazards: a non-conference meeting with Louisville in September and an October 13th game at Miami.
