The Texas Longhorns are playing host to the 24th ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys in college football action on Saturday. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Currently the betting odds for the game have the Cowboys favored by around a field goal to get the win.
Texas starts the season at 1-2, a missed extra point against California has probably kept them from being 2-1. Now the Horns have to circle the wagons yet again, looking to pick up a win against a ranked opponent in their own stadium. Oklahoma State comes in 3-0 on the year, they’ve played nobody of merit so far in those games.
The Longhorns sit at plus-4 in the turnover differential department this season, which is one of the better numbers in the country. Oklahoma State actually sits higher at plus-6, a Top 5 differential nationally. The Cowboys forced seven turnovers last week as they crushed Texas-San Antonio.
The team that wins the turnover battle should have a distinct advantage in this contest and it could be huge if Texas is able to find a way to pull off the upset at home.
Youngster Jerrod Heard has looked very good on the field so far this year. He’s leading the Longhorns in rushing by a mile and has been the best quarterback. Heard finished with 527 yards of total offense last week, the most in school history, which is certainly saying something for Texas, even if they are on hard times right now.
The road team has won the last six games in this series by an average of 18 points per game. Last year the Cowboys picked up a 38-13 win over Texas, confidence should be high for the Pokes. Mason Rudolph has thrown for almost 1,000 yards to date with five touchdowns and nearly 70 percent accuracy. The Cowboys have been able to run the ball well this year, but note the competition to date.
Texas is going to need another monster game from Heard to hang around in this one. The Longhorns showed some life despite being down huge against California, they’re going to have to show that same type of fight again in this one. Texas rises up and upsets Oklahoma State.
