NFL Sunday San Diego Chargers at New Orleans Saints: Start Time, Odds, Free Pick

Hi-res-153447956_crop_exact

Week 5 of the NFL Season continues on Sunday night and we will see the San Diego Chargers travel east to take on the New Orleans Saints. The game is scheduled for an 8:20 PM (Eastern) start time and it will be televised live on NBC. Currently the odds for the game have New Orleans favored by 3.5 points, while the total sits at 52.5. Currently 65% of the Public is on New Orleans, while 80% is on the Over. Find out what side the Public is taking on all the games by clicking HERE.

Free Analysis: The Chargers sit atop the AFC West after a bounce back game against the Chiefs put them to 3-1 on the season but they remain unproven as their three wins have come against the Raiders, Titans, and Chiefs. Their lone loss came against the undefeated Falcons but it was a home game in which they only put up 3 points and had a very poor outing from Philip Rivers. Rivers hasn't put up eye-popping numbers, averaging 224.3 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions, but he has the Chargers atop the AFC West. By throwing for 209 yards in last Sunday's 37-20 win at Kansas City, he brought his career total to 25,182 yards in 104 games, becoming the seventh-fastest player to 25,000. Rivers has been aided by a running game that is finding its stride, averaging 122.7 yards over the last three weeks. Against the Chiefs, Ryan Mathews finished with a team-high 61 yards on 14 carries in his second game after breaking his collarbone in the exhibition opener, while Jackie Battle ran for 39 yards and a TD. San Diego has five INT’s on defense and they have allowed just 17.8 ppg.

The New Orleans Saints might be one of the best 0-4 teams in NFL history, but that offers little solace as they host the San Diego Chargers on Sunday night. Seventy-seven teams have started 0-4 since 1990, when the NFL began its 12-team playoff format, and only one - the 1992 Chargers - reached the postseason. Brees, who began his NFL career with San Diego, passed for 446 yards and three touchdowns in the Saints' 28-27 loss at Green Bay last Sunday and the Pro Bowl signal-caller has now tossed at least one TD pass in an amazing 47 consecutive games, matching Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas (1956-60) for the longest streak in NFL history. Brees, who has been sacked nine times, has completed only 57.6 percent of his passes, although he has 10 touchdowns against five interceptions. The biggest problem with the offense lies in the running game, which is averaging 80.8 yards and has only produced two touchdowns. Mark Ingram, the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner and the Saints' first-round draft pick in 2011, has only 90 yards on 32 carries. The Saints will continue to have trouble winning until their NFL-worst defense (463.2 yards per game) figures out a way to keep the opponent out of the end zone. New Orleans is allowing 32.5 points per game

Free Pick: With two very good offenses I will look for the over in this one. Drew Brees always puts up some very impressive numbers at home and he will surely be looking to do the same in this one. Drew will have to if he expects to match points with San Diego tonight. The Chargers run game is starting to come around and that will only make things easier for Rivers to tee off on this weak Saints secondary that has allowed 278 ypg through the air and a whopping 8.5 yards per attempt. Rivers does have plenty of weapons and will look to exploit the Saints sorry defense in this one. This ngame has shootout written all over it as these teams combine for 55+ points.
