The epic battle for last place in the AFC West begins today at Arrowhead Stadium where the Chiefs will host their hated rival, Oakland. If a team ever needed a bye, it was the Kansas City Chiefs. KC hit its break after a 38-10 loss at Tampa Bay, a setback that was preceded by home losses to San Diego and Baltimore.

The Chiefs horrific 1-5 start was a product of many things, but, perhaps, the biggest reason for the team’s poor play was their inability to hang on to the football. Unfortunately for quarterback Matt Cassel, he was the chief offender in the turnover category, which, among other things, prompted head coach Romeo Crennel to name Brady Quinn Kansas City’s starting quarterback during the bye week.

Whether or not the change does any good remains to be seen, but it seems unlikely given Quinn’s lackluster NFL resume. It is also seems unlikely because Crennel was unable to replace himself during the during the week off. While Cassel leads the team in turnovers, Crennel leads the team in poor decision making and pathetic leadership.

For that reason, it is difficult to back the Chiefs, even against the lowly, mistake prone Raiders. Oakland has already doubled up KC in the win column and it has won and covered in its last five trip to Arrowhead, a development that, no doubt, has Marty Schottenheimer spewing expletives somewhere.

Yes, Oakland is capable of losing anytime against anyone, but the Chiefs have spent the better part of this season proving they can do the same thing.
