NFL Sunday Carolina Panthers at Washington Redskins: Start Time, Odds, Free Pick

Two struggling ball clubs, Carolina and Washington, will look to get back on track this afternoon when they square off at FedEX Field in Landover, Maryland (1:00pm ET start time, FOX). NFL Sunday Carolina Panthers at Washington Redskins Odds are expecting Mike Shanahan’s troops to stop the bleeding first, though. The Redskins are listed as a -3 against the spread favorite in today’s game while the Panthers are drawing +145 moenyline odds ($100 wins $145) to pull off the mild upset.

No one can accuse the Panthers of not being competitive as their last four losses, which unfortunately for them have come in succession, were by a combined 13 points. So Carolina knows how to stay in games, it just has no clue how to win them.

The biggest reason for the team’s inability to get over the hump on most occasions is the erratic play of quarterback Cam Newton in crunch time. Late miscues from the second year signal caller cost the Panthers against the Falcons and Bears and he has thrown just five touchdowns to eight interceptions this season.

Newton and the Panthers should have every opportunity to put an end to their misery this afternoon with Washington on the docket, but the Redskins, who have dropped two straight and three of their last four games, are saying the same thing to themselves about Carolina.

Robert Griffin III and his cohorts need only point to the Panthers 0-3 road record or to their last victory, 38-26 win over Minnesota at FedEX Field in mid-October, to bolster their confidence.

The Panthers typically struggle against good defensive teams, though, and Washington hardly fits that bill (‘Skins are giving up 28.4 points and 406.4 yards per game). Carolina’s two most impressive outings this season came against the Saints and Falcons, who rank 31st and 20th in the league in total defense, respectively.

The Panthers tallied a combined 63 points in those two games and they should find the end zone with enough frequency today to keep this game uncomfortably close for the suddenly reeling Redskins.

Free Pick: Take the Panthers +3.
