Tuesday night baseball and we will see the New York Yankees take on the Detroit Tigers in game 2 of their 4 game series from Detroit. The game is scheduled for a 7:05 (ET) pm start time and it will be televised live locally. Currently the odds have New York favored at -106, while Detroit is dogs of +100. The total for the game sits at 9.5 runs.
Free Analysis: The Yankees came out of the All-Star break by winning five of six, but they have been unimpressive since, dropping 11 of their last 17 games. New York has struggled on the road during that span, going 2-6 and scoring a total of 23 runs, but it still maintains a 5 1/2-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles atop the American League East. Justin Verlander matched a career high with 14 strikeouts while Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera each homered Monday to help Detroit (59-50) to a fifth consecutive win overall, 7-2 over New York. The Tigers have hit .310 and averaged 6.3 runs while winning 15 of 16 at home. Detroit has not won 10 straight at Comerica Park since June 15-July 15, 2006. Prince Fielder is 10 for 17 with two doubles, three homers and eight RBIs while the Tigers have gone 5-0 in August. He went 0 for 12 in the final four games of July, a 1-3 stretch for Detroit. The slugging first baseman has also gone 8 for 24 with three home runs and six RBIs in seven games the Yanks in 2012. Miguel Cabrera is 8 for 22 with three homers and seven RBIs in the last five contests overall, and he has 30 RBIs in his past 30 games to take the major league lead with 92. Including postseason, Cabrera is 7 for 19 with three homers against scheduled New York starter Phil Hughes (11-8, 3.96 ERA), but the right-hander has allowed one run over 22 innings and struck out 22 while winning his last three starts in Detroit. Hughes, 4-2 with a 2.39 ERA in his last seven starts overall, won his second straight outing Wednesday, allowing just one run despite nine hits in six innings of a 12-3 victory over Baltimore. Rick Porcello also struggled a bit last out out, going 5 2/3 innings and yielding four runs on eight hits at Boston. The sinkerballer has not surrendered a home run in his last nine starts, which bodes well against an opponent that leads the majors with with 186. Though the right-hander allowed four runs in six innings of a 10-1 home loss to New York in Game 4 of last year's AL division series, Porcello is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in his last three regular-season outings against the Yankees at Comerica Park. He gave up a run in six innings of a 4-3 victory June 2. New York's Robinson Cano is 6 for 15 versus Porcello but Derek Jeter is 1 for 15 against him. The Yankees' middle infielders combined for four hits and two RBIs Monday. Cano is batting .348 in his last 16 road games.
Free Pick: Gonna go with the Yanks in this one. Detroit is hot and playing very well at home, but they haven't won 10 in a row at home since 2006 and I don't see it happening here either. NY is 4-1 in Hughes last 5 starts vs the Cats and he has a 2.25 ERA in those starts. Phil has been on a roll this season as well, as he is 4-2 with a 2.39 ERA in his last 7 starts. For Rick Porcello he has a 5.59 ERA in his last 5 starts, despite going 2-1 over that stretch. Rick has had his struggles with New York, going 2-3 with a 4.93 ERA in 6 career starts vs them. Thanks have not been playing well on the road of late, but with a hot pitcher on the mound for them and a starter on the other side that has had problems with this team, plus the fact the the Cats are due for a home loss, should all add up to a Yankees win here.
