MLB Sunday Night New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox: Start Time, Odds, Free Pick

144492908_crop_exact

Sunday night baseball and we will see the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox wrap up their 4 game set in Boston.. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 (ET) pm start time and it will be televised live on ESPN. Currently the odds have the Red Sox favored at -118, while Yankees are dogs of +111. The total for the game sits at 9.5 runs.

Free Analysis: After snapping a five-game win streak on Saturday night, the Red Sox look to end the first half of their season with a series split against the rival Yankees tonight. The Yankees sit comfortably atop the AL East, thanks to  a 22-8 record in their past 30 games. They are also 4-1 against Boston this season (all at Fenway Park), scoring 42 runs in these five contests. New York flexed its muscles Saturday, bashing seven home runs in the doubleheader to push its major league-leading total to 133. Three of the long balls came off the bat of Andruw Jones, who got a chance to play when the Red Sox started two left-handers Saturday. For Sunday’s capper to the four-game set, New York will send Ivan Nova to the mound in search of his 10th win. The Yankees are 12-4 when Nova takes the hill this year, including 8-1 in his nine road starts. Nova (9-3, 4.05 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) has been strong in his past three starts, sporting a 2.84 ERA and 17 K’s in 19 innings. He has allowed 26 base-runners (1.37 WHIP) in this span, though. Nova continues to be much stronger on the road this season with a 3.55 ERA and 1.30 WHIP, fanning 44 batters and walking just 14. He will be making his fifth career start in this rivalry, and his numbers versus the Sox have been pretty horrible (5.91 ERA, 1.50 WHIP). The Red Sox counter with lefty Jon Lester, who has been horrible at Fenway Park, carting a 5.60 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in nine home starts, where the Sox are just 3-6. Lester (5-5, 4.33 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) has mediocre numbers versus the Yanks in his career (4.15 ERA, 1.40 WHIP), but he has a personal 8-3 record against them in 17 starts. However, his team has lost three straight times Lester faced New York, including last September in New York, when he allowed eight runs in just 2.2 innings of work. The Red Sox are just 7-10 in Lester’s 17 starts this season, as he has allowed 4+ runs in eight of these outings. Lester is coming off his best start in weeks, limiting the Oakland Athletics to one run on four hits while matching his season high of nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. The Red Sox have gotten some recent help Via the Minors. Pedro Ciriaco, who was summoned from the minors Friday, had four hits and four RBIs to lift the Red Sox to a 9-5 victory over the New York Yankees in Saturday's nightcap. Another callup from Pawtucket, R.I., Mauro Gomez, had three hits Saturday night and is 7-for-13 in the series against the Yankees.

Free Pick: Gonna go with the plus money and the Yanks in this one. Ivan Nova has struggled with the Sox in his career, but he did hold them in check earlier in the year, holding them to 2 ER's in 6 innings.Ivan has been solid on the road with a 6-1 mark and a 3.55 ERA, with the Yanks going 8-1 in his road starts. John Lester has really had some problems at home with a 2-3 mark and a 5.60 ERA. This is his first start vs the Yanks this year and while is is 8-3 with a 4.15 ERA in 17 career starts vs them, he was 2-2 with a 6.66 ERA in 5 starts vs them last year. Boston has lost his last 3 starts vs the Yanks and they are just 7-10 in his 17 overall starts vs them. The Yanks offense is rolling right now (5.8 rpg  L5 games), wild Boston continues to deal with injuries (Pedroia out and Middlebrooks questionable), plus the Yanks have the better pen and Boston is 8-22 this year vs teams with a pen ERA of 3.33 or less. Look for the Yanks to take the series and put even more distance between themselves and their hated rivals.
