Free Analysis: A late August series between the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox with significant playoff implications is not something many people would have predicted a few months ago. But as it stands, both surprising contenders have a strong shot at playing into October. The White Sox enter the four-game set at Camden Yards with a 2 1/2-game lead over the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central, while the Orioles cling to the second wild-card spot. The White Sox had some problems with the weather Sunday, but managed to get in a seven-inning win over the Seattle Mariners, pushing their winning streak to six. Chicago overcame a deficit in the sixth inning or later in all three games against the Mariners and has gotten home runs from Tyler Flowers in four of the last six. Francisco Liriano gets the ball for the Sox and he has won back-to-back starts - his first two victories since joining Chicago - and was strong against the New York Yankees last week, striking out seven while allowing two runs in six innings. The 28-year-old lefty has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his five starts with the White Sox. Liriano lost to Baltimore when he was with the Minnesota Twins on July 18, despite striking out 10 and yielding only two runs on four hits in six frames. He is 2-3 with a 4.31 ERA in six career starts against the Orioles. Baltimore is tied with the Oakland Athletics at 69-57, one-half game in front of the Tigers. The Orioles swept a rain-shortened two-game series from the Toronto Blue Jays over the weekend and have won five of seven with a combination of strong starting pitching and power. The Orioles made a move to improve their rotation Sunday, picking up veteran LHP Joe Saunders from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-handed reliever Matt Lindstrom. Wei-Yin Chen (12-7, 3.87 ERA) has had seven full days off since his last start, when he earned a win at Detroit despite being knocked around for five runs in five innings. The Taiwanese rookie has given up at least five runs in two of his last three starts. Chen made his second career start against Chicago on April 17 and earned the win, surrendering two runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Sox are 33-29 on the road this year, while the O's are 34-29 at home.

As bad as Francisco Liriano has been this year overall, he really hasn't pitched all that badly of late, allowing 2 ER's or less in 4 of his last 5 starts and 3 ER's or less in 7 of his last 9 starts. He has faced the Sox once this year and allowed just 2 ER's in 5.1 innings of work, in a game that saw just 5 runs scored. I look for around 6 runs tops in this one.
