MLB Free Picks: San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres

Friday night baseball and we will see the San Francisco Giants take on the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for a 10:10 PM (Eastern) start time and the game will be televised locally. Current Betting Odds, according to Sportsbook.ag, have San Francisco listed as the favorite.

Current Odds

San Francisco        -110
San Diego             +100

Over/ Under: 7  -110

Analysis: The San Francisco Giants have shown flashes of the team that won the World Series a season ago but they still have work to do if they hope to repeat. The Giants are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 5-5 on the road this season, and they are 1.5 games back in the standings. As a team the Giants are hitting .265 with Brandin Crawford hitting .320, Pablo Sandoval hitting .289, and Angel Pagan hitting .279. The Giants swept the three-game series at AT&T Park vs the Padres, and they’re off to a 9-3 start against National League West opponents. For tonight’s game San Francisco starts Tim Lincecum who is still looking to regain his Cy Young form.  Lincecum came out ahead last Saturday in San Francisco, when he tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory. The Giants are hoping Lincecum turned a corner with his last start, when he recorded a season-high eight strikeouts. The two-time Cy Young winner struggled in his first three outings while posting a 15-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Headley is 10-for-38 with three home runs against Lincecum, who is 11-5 with a 2.33 ERA in 23 career starts against the Padres. Buster Posey will catch Lincecum for the second straight game after Hector Sanchez started his first three outings.

The San Diego Padres are struggling and they are among the worst teams in baseball thus far this season. The Padres snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over Milwaukee on Wednesday, but they’re 6-15 overall and already well behind first-place Colorado in the division race. “Obviously, we didn’t want to have another bad start like last year,” general manager Josh Byrnes told reporters, “but here we are.” Third baseman Chase Headley joined outfielder Carlos Quentin in the lineup for the first time earlier this week, which should help improve the team’s anemic offense.. As a team the Padres are hitting .240 with Chris Denorfria hitting .323, Nick Hundley hitting .311, and Everth Cabrera hitting .273. For game one against the Giants San Diego starts Andrew Cashner who makes his second start after starting the season in the bullpen. Cashner worked four innings and allowed a two-run homer to Pablo Sandoval last Saturday against the Giants in his first start of the season. Posey is 3-for-6 with two home runs against the 26-year-old right-hander, who is 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in seven career games (one start) against the Giants. Cashner was limited to 65 pitches in his first start. His pitch limit will be increased to about 80 on Friday.

Pick: Backing Tim Lincecum on the road has been a risky proposition of late, but this is a good spot to do so. Tim is 2-0 on the year with a 3.97 ERA and in his last starts he pitched 6.2 innings of shutout ball vs these Padres, giving up just 4 hits and 2 walks in the game. He does have a 5.09 ERA in his last 3 starts, but with a very nice 1.17 WHIP and the Giants are 3-0 in those starts. He is pitching much better than last year and he will face a San Diego team that has averaged just 1.2 rpg and have hit a mere .201 in their last 5 games. The Giant offense has give Tim 6.5 rpg worth of support this year and they score 4.4 rpg on the road, so I expect them to have a good showing vs Andrew Cashner, who is 0-2 with a 4.40 ERA in 7 career starts. Look for Tim to continue to bounce back, while the Padres continue to lose. They scored just 2 total runs vs the Giants in their 3 game set last week and should have similar problems scoring in this series as well.
