Prior to the season's kickoff, Kentucky tentatively held the title as the SEC's worst team; it went ahead and made the moniker official last weekend after losing to Western Kentucky in Nashville. Despite the loss, the Wildcats are a heavy favorite in their Week 2 meeting with Miami, Ohio (12:00pm ET, September 7th at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington). College Football Point Spreads at 5Dimes have Kentucky listed as a -17.5 against the spread home favorite. The Over/Under in Saturday's non-conference dust up between the Redhawks and Wildcats is set at 56.5 points.
After Kentucky's opening weekend performance against Western Kentucky, it is perfectly reasonable to expect this Saturday's meeting with Miami, Ohio will represent the team's best opportunity to get win until a November 2nd meeting with Alabama St.
The Wildcats, who were lined as a four point road favorite against the Hilltoppers, lost 26-35 to their in-state rival. Kentucky put together a decent offensive outing, rushing for 216 yards on 32 carries, but 10 penalties and a leaky defense (487 yards allowed) proved too difficult to overcome.
A Redhawks sighting in Lexington should be a welcome one, though, as their season opener left even more to be desired. Miami jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening frame, but things went straight downhill from there as a potent Marshall squad laid a 52-14 thrashing on Don Treadwell's over-matched troops.
The Redhawks allowed 34 first downs and 591 yards for the game and they yielded five second half touchdowns to the Thundering Herd.
Kentucky is no Marshall, but it has enough of a rushing attack to punish Miami's soft front seven. Still, with a new coach and a new system, laying 17.5 points on the Wildcats seems like, well, a gamble.
