Maui Invitational North Carolina Tar Heels vs Butler Bulldogs: Start Time, Spread, Free Pick

Tuesday CBB and we will see the Butler Bulldogs take on the North Carolkina Tar Heels as part of the Maui Invitational at the new Lahaina Civic Center in Maui, Hawaii. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 pm (Eastern) start time and will be televised live on ESPN. Currently the odds for the game have North Carolina favored by 9 points while the total sits at 141.5.  Check out Sportsbook Spy to see who the Public is taking on all of today's games.

Free Analysis: Butler won’t have long to savor its wild opening-round victory at the Maui Invitational. The Bulldogs will face No. 9 North Carolina on Tuesday in the semifinals. Brad Stevens must be especially pleased with the offensive balance displayed by his starters. Four finished in double figures against Marquette, led by a career-high 24 points from 6-6 junior forward Khyle Marshall. Stevens, who guided the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament final in 2010 and 2011, likely wants to see more from his bench, however. They combined for only two points against Marquette. Butler is leaning on its new backcourt of Arkansas transfer Clark (16.0 PPG) and freshman Kellen Dunham (11.0 PPG). Clark, who averaged 14.2 PPG and hit 42% of his three-pointers in three seasons for the Razorbacks, has been a little off in the early going for Butler. He scored 20 against Marquette but needed 21 shots to get them. In their previous game, a loss at Xavier, he scored just seven points on 3-for-11 FG and 1-for-7 3-pt FG. After scoring double-digits off the bench in his first two collegiate games, Dunham drew his first career start in the Marquette win, but was largely invisible (four points, all from the line).

The Heels blew away Mississippi State in their first round game, allowing them to hold back their starters and stay fresh. Carolina has been a double-digit favorite in all three of its lined games this season, and has covered each time. Not much went wrong for the Tar Heels in their tournament opener. They scored the game’s first nine points, hit a half-court shot to end the first half and continued to dominate even after their starters called it a day. Leslie McDonald was probably the biggest surprise. After finishing fifth in scoring on a talent-laden team two years ago, the 6-5 junior guard missed all of last season after undergoing knee surgery. He exploded for a career-high 21 points against Mississippi State, making 6 of 10 3-pointers. Carolina has leaned on sophomore PF James Michael McAdoo (18.3 PPG, 9.5 RPG) thus far, though it got some big shooting performances from perimeter players to pull away from Mississippi State, a 95-49 win. SG Reggie Bullock (11.5 PPG, 52.4% 3-pt FG) scored 16 on 5-for-6 FG and 4-for-5 threes. The Heels held MSU to 28.3% FG and 11.8% 3-pt FG.

Free Pick: Wow what a win by Butler in the opening round of this tourney, but that will not happen again. I expect a much better Heels squad to come out and dominate this team and not let them stay close enough to have a shot at winning in the end. This Carolina squad is very talented and has plenty of balance on offense, with Macadoo averaging 18.3 ppg and Bullock putting in 11.5 ppg, while off the bench yesterday SG Leslie McDonald has added 8.3 PPG and has hit 53% from 3-pt land, and SG P.J. Hairston has put in 10.0 ppg. This team is loaded. Butler is a good team and will be heard from in the A-10, but they just don't have enough offensive weapons to stay with Carolina in this one. They may also be still celebrating yesterday's last second win. Carolina may not win as easily as they did yesterday, but i still look for a solid 15+ point win by them here.
