Analysis: the Philadelphia Phillies have not had a great start to their year but after taking game 1 in this series they are still just 5.5 games behind the Braves in the NL East. The Phils have been a healthier offensive team team this year, but still they are just 24th in the league in scoring (3.87 rpg), 25th in hitting (.240) and 20th in homers (56). The problem is that Age may be catching up and the younger players just aren't producing as expected. The Pitching has not been all that good this year and losing Cliff Lee hasn't helped. The Phils are 21st in the league in ERA (4.02) and 21st in WHIP (1.34). Getting the ball for Philadelphia tonight will be Kyle Kendrick, who is just 2-6 with a 4.09 ERA on the year overall, while on the road he is 0-3 with a 4.78 ERA. Kyle has had very good success vs the Braves in his career, going 7-2 with a 2.78 ERA in 21 appearances (15 starts) vs them.
The Atlanta Braves are not playing their best ball right now, as they come in having won just 8 of their last 20 games. Even with losing last night they are still a half a game a head of the Washington Nationals in the NL East. The Braves have really struggled at the plate this year, as they come in ranked 27th in scoring (3.68 rpg), 22nd in hitting (.244) and 10th in homers (68). The Pitching has been the thing that has kept this team afloat this year, as they come in ranked 5th in ERA (3.34), 11th in WHIP (1.26) and 1st in quality starts (48). The Braves will be sending out Ervin Santana, who is 5-3 with a 4.09 ERA on the year, while at home he has gone 3-1 with a 4.28 ERA. Santana is 1-0 with an 0.69 ERA in 2 career starts vs the Phils.
Pick: The Phils took game 1 of this series, but I expect the Braves to bounce back tonight. Santana gets the nod over Kendrick, even though Kyle has nice lifetime number vs the Braves. The Phils are playing solid ball right now, but Atlanta is still the better team and will get a solid win tonight.
