The Kansas State Wildcats surprised in 2011 with their second place Big 12 finish, but last year's effort from Bill Snyder's squad was even more astounding as it won the league title with an 8-1 conference record. Despite last season's championship and Snyder's remarkable coaching acumen, the Wildcats are not viewed as a threat to win the Big 12 in 2013. College Football Predictions at 5Dimes have Kansas State pegged for a sixth place conference finish at +1600 odds ($100 wins $1600) and it is favored to win Under eight games at -135 odds.
The lack of championship optimism surrounding Kansas State is somewhat understandable considering what the team lost over the offseason. Quarterback Collin Klein, a Heisman finalist last year and the unquestioned leader of the team, moved on as did first team All American linebacker Arthur Brown. However, there are plenty of big contributors back in running back John Hubert, safety Ty Zimmerman, and wide receivers Tyler Lockett and Tramaine Thompson. Most important, though, is the guy on the sidelines.
Snyder is, arguably, the best coach in America and few people craft a game plan or call a game as well as the former Iowa assistant. Expecting another conference title from the Wildcats may be foolhardy, but banking on a sixth place finish from Kansas State is pure ignorance.
