Iowa Hawkeyes at Iowa State Cyclones, Free Pick

CFB Saturday and we will see state rivals collide when the Iowa Hawkeyes travel Ames, Iowa to take on the Iowa State Cyclones. The start time is 6:00 pm (Eastern) and the game will be televised on Fox Sports 1. Current Odds have Iowa listed as 2 point favorites, while the total sits at 49.

Analysis: Iowa rebounded from its season-opening loss to Northern Illinois with a 28-14 win over Missouri State this past weekend. Iowa racked up 489 yards of total offense against Missouri State, including 296 on the ground. Mark Weisman lead the team with 280 yards rushing and 2 TD's. It marked the sixth career 100-yard rushing game for Weisman. Sophomore QB Jake Rudock has been able to move the chains, but he must improve his decision-making (three interceptions in two games, including one that was returned for a TD). The Hawkeyes defense notched two takeaways against Missouri State and limited the Bears to only 197 yards of total offense.  Anthony Hitchens turned in another solid performance with a team-high eight tackles (2.0 TFL) and a sack. He now has 21 tackles through two games, to lead the team. Iowa leads the all-time series 39-21 and has won 16 of 24 meetings at Iowa State.

Iowa State has had two weeks to stew since a stunning 28-20 loss to FCS opponent Northern Iowa and looks to rebound when Iowa pays a visit on Saturday. Iowa State has won the last two matchups, squeezing out a 9-6 victory at Iowa last season and prevailing in a wild triple-overtime thriller 44-41 in 2011. The Cyclones posted 410 total yards against Northern Iowa, marking only the third time in their last 11 games they managed to crack the 400-yard barrier. However 2 missed field goals in the first half and a couple of red zone FG's instead of TD's in the 2nd half, kept them from gaining the win. Iowa State had seven defensive players make their first collegiate starts against UNI, the most of any other school in the Big 12. That inexperience was evident as the Panthers were able to move the ball up and down the field, accumulating 23 first downs and 457 yards of total offense. Iowa State is one of two schools (Ohio State) to beat a ranked team on the road in each of the previous three seasons.

Pick: At the beginning of the year I stated that this ISU squad was a bad team and wouldn't win 6 games this year. Im am sticking to it with this one. Iowa is the better team here, on both sides of the ball. Their offense has put up 473 ypg through 2 games, while their defense has allowed just 310 ypg. The Cyclones started their year with a 28-20 loss to an FCS foe and they allowed 457 yards in that game at 7.4 yards per play. Ouch. Their defense will not stop the Hawkeyes in this one.
