Golf Betting: Tigers Woods and Rory McIlroy Major Propositions [Updated]

With long shot Webb Simpson’s surprising win at the 2012 U.S. Open, the odds of either Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy winning a major championship this year took a big hit. Woods was in the chase at the Olympic Club through two rounds of play, but he fell apart on Saturday and Sunday, shooting eight over par on the tournament’s final two days to finish at seven over for the event. McIlroy never got that far, missing the cut mark in defense of his 2011 U.S. Open title. Updated major propositions for the pair now have Woods garnering 1-6 odds ($600 to win $100) to not win a major this season while McIlroy is drawing 1-9 ($900 to win $100) to not win his second career major in 2012.

With just two majors left on the season, it seems unlikely that either Tigers Woods or Rory McIlory will emerge victorious in either one. The possibility does exist, however, particularly with Woods starting to look more like the golfer that dominated the PGA Tour for over a decade. Woods has not been in top form for the year’s first two majors, finishing 40th at the Masters and 21st at last weekend’s U.S. Open, but he does have two wins this season. His balky legs also appear to be cooperating, which may be the most critical aspect of all when evaluating his chances at capturing either the British Open or PGA Championship.

McIlroy, despite holding the No. 2 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings, has not played like one of the Tour’s top players of late. The Northern Ireland native started the season in tremendous fashion, recording five top five finishes between the European and PGA Tours, but he missed the cut in four of his last five tournaments entered.

The pair’s first opportunity to prove the odds makers wrong will come next month at The Open Championship (July 19 – Jul 22 Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club). Woods has three British Open titles to his credit, but the last one came in 2006. He did not play at the Open in 2008 or 2011 and he missed the cut for the 2009 event. McIlory tied for third at the 2010 Open Championship and he finished 25th last year.

The PGA Championship will be played at the Kiawah Island Golf Course in South Carolina on August 9th – August 12th. Woods, who owns four PGA Championship victories, missed the cut last year at the Atlantic Athletic Club. McIlroy placed a distant 64th at last year’s PGA, but he tied for third in 2009 and 2010.
