An own goal by England kept that match from continuing and possibly putting them in the World Cup Finals. Alas, Japan won the match and marched on to face the Americans for a repeat of the last World Cup final.
In today's match the Germans could play one of two ways. Either they will play a very nice match and throttle the English or they will sulk because they were beaten by the Americans despite everyone telling them they were the best team in the world. If Germany plays to its potential, this match will certainly favor them. The English showed they can attack well in their semifinal match against the Japanese, but a solid formation team can cause them some problems.
Germany has had several players pick up tallies this World Cup. Célia Šašic leads the way with six goals so far, she has the most tallies the entire World Cup by any player. She missed the penalty kick against the United States that would have given Germany the lead in the second half, a crushing blow. If the Germany pack it up and feel that fourth place is good enough, the English might be able to pick up a win here today. That's hard to see happening. Even if they play just an average match, they should beat the English.
This match will be played in Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. Ri Hyang-ok (North Korea) will be the referee for the match.
