The FIFA Women's World Cup continues today with top-ranked Germany set to take on Norway in the opening game of the day. Germany put a stamp on things early in this World Cup, beating Ivory Coast 10-0 in the opening match of group play. Now they face a significantly tougher test in Norway at TD Place Stadium in Ottawa.
Both teams are in a comfortable position to advance into the knockout stages, but today's match is certainly important. With each team having three points and both Ivory Coast and Thailand on the outside looking in, the loser of this match all of a sudden has a little more pressure on themselves. But, a 4-0 win over Thailand certainly helps Norway when it comes to aggregate differential.
Anja Mittag and Celia Sasic each scored three times for Germany in that romp, Isabell Herlovsen scored twice for Norway in its first match.
Both squads are supporting solid defensive units, but it's not hard to see this one getting up around the four goal type of game. Germany will once again flex their proverbial team muscles, possessing the ball and taking advantage of scoring opportunities.
Norway has some talent, they're ranked just outside the Top 10 in the world with a FIFA ranking of 11. Today, though, the Germans are just too much.
