The Maryland Terrapins will look to extend their record to 3-0 this afternoon when they welcome the Connecticut Huskies to Byrd Stadium in College Park. No ran out into the night air and fired pistols overhead when the Terrapins improved to 2-0 last weekend, but there were some surprised folks in both College Park and Philadelphia. Maryland, playing as a 10.5 point road dog, knocked off the Temple Owls 36-27 to match its season win total from last year.
The Terps ran out to a huge 26-3 before the break thanks to three second quarter touchdowns, but they saw their advantage reduced to two points midway through the final frame. Four lost fumbles nearly spoiled a spectacular defensive effort as Maryland held the Owls to nine first downs and 230 total yards for the game.
Head Coach Randy Edsall can only hope for a similar defensive showing this afternoon, but his wish may come true against the offensively challenged Huskies. Edsall’s former school scored 37 points against an overmatched Massachusetts team in its opener, but it managed just seven at home last weekend opposite a much better NC State team. The Huskies produced 11 first downs and 239 yards against the Wolfpack, but they did hinder their own cause with four turnovers.
While Maryland looks like a better team in Edsall’s second year, Connecticut does represent a step up in competition over its first two opponents, meaning points will probably be at a premium.
